Houston at Arizona

TUCSON (Interstat) — Cade Climie’s four-RBI performance lifted Houston to a 7-5 victory over Arizona in 13 innings Saturday at Hi Corbett Field, snapping a losing streak for the Cougars in a Big 12 matchup that stretched deep into the desert night.

Climie, the designated hitter, finished 3 for 7 with a home run and four runs batted in. He drove in the go-ahead run in the top of the 12th inning with a double to left-center that scored Tre Broussard from second base, giving Houston a 5-4 lead. After Arizona answered in the bottom half, Climie’s earlier three-run homer in the seventh inning had already erased a four-run deficit and turned a 4-1 hole into a 4-4 tie.

Houston improved to 22-28 overall, while Arizona dropped to 17-32.

The Cougars struck first in the second inning when Riley Jackson homered to deep left field for a 1-0 lead. Arizona responded in the fifth against starter Paul Schmitz. Brennan singled in a run, Meurant added a sacrifice bunt that pushed across another and Carson McEntire followed with a two-run homer to left, giving the Wildcats a 4-1 advantage.

Schmitz exited after 5 1/3 innings, allowing four earned runs on three hits with three strikeouts. The Cougars’ bullpen took over from there. Richie Roman threw 3 2/3 scoreless innings, striking out four without allowing a hit. Ryne Rodriguez worked 2 1/3 innings, surrendering one earned run on two hits while striking out one. Roman earned the victory.

Arizona starter Luc Fladda pitched six innings, allowing one earned run on 10 hits. Maclain Roberts tossed two scoreless frames. Garrett Hicks gave up two hits in two innings but did not allow a run.

The Cougars loaded the bases in the seventh after Broussard singled and Cox reached third. Climie then launched his three-run homer to left, tying the game at 4-4. Houston threatened again in the eighth, putting two runners on, but a groundout ended the inning.

Both teams went scoreless through the ninth and 10th. In the 11th, Houston stranded two runners after Fields and Sabathia singled. Arizona put runners on first and second with one out in the bottom half, but Rodriguez induced a groundout to short to escape.

In the 12th, Broussard led off with a single, stole second and scored on Climie’s double to left-center. Arizona answered in the bottom half when Sylvester singled and Mihalakis tripled down the right-field line, scoring Sylvester and tying the game at 5-5.

Houston broke the tie in the 13th. Fields singled, Sabathia was hit by a pitch and Jackson singled to center, scoring Fields. Cox singled to load the bases, and Broussard lifted a sacrifice fly to right-center that scored Sabathia, making it 7-5.

Rodriguez retired the Wildcats in order in the bottom of the 13th, striking out none but inducing three flyouts to center and right.

Tre Broussard went 4 for 7 with an RBI for Houston. Riley Jackson was 3 for 6 with a home run and an RBI. For Arizona, Carson McEntire was 2 for 5 with a home run and two RBIs.

The Cougars collected 23 hits, while the Wildcats had 12. Each team executed two sacrifice hits. Houston made no errors, while Arizona committed two fielding errors.

Climie entered the game after a 0-for-3 performance Friday against the same Wildcats and an 0-for-4 showing the day before. He had homered in a win over Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on May 5.

Arizona’s loss continued a difficult stretch for the Wildcats, who have dropped nine of their last 10 games. Houston snapped a two-game skid with the win.

The Interstat game simulator had projected a 4-3 Houston victory, while the Interstat ELO system gave Arizona a 62.50 percent probability to win the game.
