Houston 7, at Arizona 5

Houston at Arizona

TUCSON, Ariz. (Interstat) — The Houston Cougars and Arizona Wildcats continue their Big 12 series Saturday at Hi Corbett Field, with first pitch scheduled for a clear, 94-degree afternoon.

Houston (20-28) seeks to even the series after dropping the opener Friday. The Cougars enter off a 10-1 win Tuesday over Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, a game that showcased the arm of right-hander Caden Cooper. The pitcher to watch for Houston worked 6 2/3 innings, allowing three hits and one earned run while striking out seven. Cooper has been inconsistent this season — he lasted just 1 2/3 innings in a May 2 loss to Cincinnati — but his ability to work deep into games could be critical against a Wildcats lineup that has struggled to score consistently.

Arizona (17-30) is coming off an 8-6 victory Wednesday over New Mexico State, powered by catcher Beau Sylvester. The player to watch for the Wildcats went 2-for-5 with two home runs and three RBIs. Sylvester has been one of Arizona’s most reliable bats, posting multi-hit games in five of his last 10 contests, including a 3-for-4 day at Kansas on May 1. However, the Wildcats have lost seven of their last 10 overall and have dropped four of their last five home games.

The pitching matchup has not been announced, but both teams will rely on key arms out of the bullpen. Houston’s Caleb Kimble threw two scoreless innings with three strikeouts in the Tuesday win, while Arizona’s Jack Lafflam fired four shutout frames Wednesday.

The projections offer a mixed outlook. Interstat’s game simulator predicts a 4-3 Houston victory, while Interstat’s ELO system gives Arizona a 63.6 percent probability of winning.

Saturday’s game is the second of a three-game series. The teams meet again Sunday in Tucson, then Houston returns home to host Rice on Tuesday and Arizona State for a three-game weekend series. Arizona travels to Oklahoma State for a three-game set starting Thursday.
