Iona at Yale
WEST HAVEN, Conn. (Interstat) — Davis Hanson drove in four runs with two doubles and Yale scored six times in the second inning to rout Iona 12-1 on Wednesday at Yale Field.
The Bulldogs improved to 24-13, while the Gaels dropped to 16-25. Yale outhit Iona 11-4.
The decisive outburst came after Iona had taken a 1-0 lead in the top of the first on a flurry of flyouts and stranded runners in the second. Yale answered in the bottom of the second. Aiden Dossa walked and stole two bases before Chris Diprima dropped a bunt single to first base, scoring Dossa to tie the game. Jack Dauer walked and Colin Sloan flied out, but a fielder’s choice ended the inning with the score 1-1.
The Bulldogs then sent 11 batters to the plate in the second inning. Bryce Miller singled and advanced on a throwing error by the pitcher, and Brady Ruiz-Weiss walked. After Dossa struck out looking and Garrett Larsen flied out, Diprima singled to left center, scoring Miller and moving Ruiz-Weiss to third. Dauer walked, then a balk allowed Ruiz-Weiss to score and moved Diprima and Dauer into scoring position. Sloan singled to center, driving in both runners and giving Yale a 5-1 lead. Jack Hays walked, and Hanson doubled to center, plating Hays and Sloan to make it 7-1. Jack Puvogel relieved for Iona and ended the inning.
Hanson struck again in the fourth. After Sloan singled, Jack Hays reached on catcher’s interference, putting two on with no outs. Hanson doubled to left center, scoring both runs unearned and pushing the lead to 9-1. He advanced to third on a flyout and scored on a single by Dossa, making it 10-1.
Yale added two more in the fifth. Diprima singled to right, and Dauer tripled to center, scoring Diprima. Sloan then lifted a sacrifice fly to right, scoring Dauer for a 12-1 advantage.
Iona scored its only run in the top of the sixth. With reliever Brett Faccio on the mound for Yale, Mora reached on a throwing error by the third baseman. Kehoe then reached on a second error by the second baseman, and Costello singled to load the bases. Silvia walked, forcing in Mora unearned, but the rally ended when Lenski and Murphy struck out looking.
The Gaels managed four hits – two singles by Silvia, one by Costello and one by Kehoe – but grounded into two double plays and left five runners on base. Yale’s pitching staff, led by starter Nicholas West, stifled Iona after the first inning. West worked three innings, allowing one hit and striking out one. Brett Faccio followed with two innings of one-run ball, and Daniel Cohen, who started the game, worked a scoreless first before being replaced. For Iona, starter Onorato was lifted in the second after allowing five runs. Puvogel, Aiden Jovia and Daniel Castillo combined for the final 4 2/3 innings, with Castillo striking out one and walking none.
Yale also stole four bases, including two by Dossa and two by Larsen. The Bulldogs’ defense turned three double plays.
The game was the second meeting of the season between the teams. Yale defeated Iona 7-6 in 10 innings on March 25 in New Rochelle, New York.
