Elon at Winthrop
ROCK HILL, S.C. (Interstat) — Jared Hall homered and drove in two runs, and the Elon Phoenix scored seven times in a chaotic eighth inning to erase a late deficit and outlast the Winthrop Eagles 10-8 in a nonconference baseball game Tuesday night at Winthrop Ballpark.
The victory avenged a 13-3 loss to Winthrop just a week prior and improved Elon to 17-23 overall. Winthrop, which saw a five-game winning streak snapped, fell to 27-14.
The game’s decisive turn came in the top of the eighth inning with Winthrop leading 8-3. Elon sent 13 batters to the plate, capitalizing on two hit batters, a walk, a critical error and timely hitting to surge ahead.
The rally began innocently with a single by Ryan DuRoff and a hit-by-pitch to Gar Hindle. After another hit-by-pitch loaded the bases, Winthrop reliever Jake Tompkins appeared to get a potential double-play ball from Elon’s Smith. But second baseman Aidan Crowley misplayed it, allowing two runs to score and keeping the inning alive. A sacrifice fly by Nick Fattore brought in another run, cutting the deficit to 8-6.
Elon pinch-hitter Bogdanchik then delivered the biggest blow, a two-run double to tie the game. After a pitching change, leadoff man Alford doubled to score Bogdanchik with the go-ahead run. Hall followed with an RBI double to provide a critical insurance run, completing the seven-run outburst.
The inning stood in stark contrast to the game’s first seven frames, which were dominated by pitching and a few key swings. Winthrop’s Josh Skowronski was the early star, launching a solo home run in the first inning and clearing the bases with a three-run double in the seventh to key a five-run rally that gave the Eagles an 8-3 lead. He finished 2 for 5 with four RBIs.
Hall answered for Elon with a solo homer in the fifth inning, his second in three games, and added the important double in the eighth. He was 2 for 5 on the night.
While the offenses erupted late, relief pitching set the stage for Elon’s comeback. After starter Krift struggled, the Phoenix bullpen combination of Cole Miller, Michael Irby and Cole Hansen provided 4 2/3 innings of scoreless, hitless relief from the second through the sixth innings, striking out three. Sam Nomura and Staiano closed it out, with Nomura getting five key outs in the seventh and eighth to earn the win.
For Winthrop, starter Garrett Byrd allowed two earned runs over 2 1/3 innings. Relievers Walker Brodt and Raymond McNaught combined for 2 2/3 scoreless frames, but the bullpen could not contain the Phoenix in the fateful eighth.
Elon finished with eight hits, while Winthrop had nine. The Phoenix overcame a Interstat game simulator projection that had favored Winthrop 6-3 and gave the Eagles a 57.3% probability to win.
Elon travels to face UNC Wilmington in a three-game series starting Friday. Winthrop opens a series at Gardner-Webb on Friday.
