Elon at Winthrop
ROCK HILL, S.C. (Interstat) — The Winthrop Eagles will look to continue their strong season and complete a two-game sweep of the Elon Phoenix when the teams meet Tuesday at Winthrop Ballpark.
First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m. under cloudy skies with temperatures near 69 degrees.
Winthrop (27-13) enters with significant momentum, having won eight of its last 10 games, including a three-game weekend series over South Carolina Upstate. The Eagles dominated the previous meeting with Elon this season, a 13-3 road victory on April 14.
The Eagles’ bullpen could be a key factor, with Colby McNeely providing recent stability. In Sunday’s extra-inning win over Upstate, McNeely pitched four scoreless innings of relief, allowing three hits and striking out two. Over his last seven appearances, he has posted a 2.16 ERA in 8 1/3 innings.
Elon (16-23) aims to rebound after dropping two of three at Campbell over the weekend. The Phoenix will rely on starter Owen Winebarger, who is coming off a potent performance. In Sunday’s 10-5 win at Campbell, Winebarger pitched 7 2/3 innings, surrendering four earned runs on six hits while striking out six. His season has been inconsistent, however, including a rough outing in the April 14 loss to these same Eagles.
Offensively, Elon will look for production from Jared Hall, who hit a home run with three RBIs on Sunday, and Brian DuRoff, who added two hits and three RBIs in that victory.
Interstat’s game simulator projects a 6-3 Winthrop victory, giving the Eagles a 57.3% probability to win based on its ELO rating system.
Following the midweek contest, Winthrop opens a Big South Conference series at Gardner-Webb on Friday. Elon begins a Colonial Athletic Association series at home against UNC Wilmington on Friday.
