Arizona State at BYU

PROVO, Utah (Interstat) — Cole Carlon delivered a masterful performance on the mound, and the Arizona State offense erupted for a seven-run second inning to power the Sun Devils to a 13-0 victory over BYU in a seven-inning Big 12 conference game Friday at Larry H. Miller Field.

The win provided immediate and decisive redemption for Arizona State, which suffered a 19-9 run-rule loss to the Cougars just one day earlier. The Sun Devils improved to 27-13 overall, while BYU fell to 20-17.

The most important part of the game was Carlon’s dominant start, which completely stifled any momentum BYU carried from its offensive outburst Thursday. The right-hander was flawless over six innings, allowing no hits and striking out 11 batters. He walked none, facing just one batter over the minimum. His performance stood in stark contrast to his previous outing, a loss to Utah where he allowed seven earned runs.

Arizona State’s offense, held in check early in Thursday’s defeat, wasted little time breaking through in the rematch. The game turned decisively in the top of the second inning against BYU starter Tyler Ball. With two outs and a runner on first via a walk to Ryan Smaldino, catcher Brody Briggs launched a two-run home run to right field to open the scoring. The Sun Devils then relentlessly extended the rally, loading the bases with a single and two walks before a wild pitch brought home another run. Austen Roellig then cleared the bases with a two-run double, capping the seven-run outburst and giving Carlon more than enough support.

The Sun Devils added single runs in the fifth and sixth innings before putting the game fully out of reach with a four-run seventh. That final rally was fueled by three walks, a hit batter, two wild pitches that allowed runs to score, and an RBI double from Matthew Polk. Landon Hairston contributed two RBIs on the day, finishing 2 for 3 with two walks.

BYU’s offense, which compiled 19 runs on 18 hits Thursday, was utterly neutralized. The Cougars managed only three singles, one each from Cooper Anderson, Easton Painter and Parker Goff. Anderson’s first-inning single was immediately erased when he was caught stealing, and Goff’s sixth-inning double went for naught. After Carlon’s six hitless innings, reliever Taylor Penn worked a perfect seventh to seal the combined shutout.

BYU used five pitchers in the loss. Ball took the brunt of the damage, allowing three earned runs on five hits over 2 1/3 innings of relief. Brayden Marx failed to record an out in the seventh, allowing an earned run and two walks, while Jaxon Clayton recorded the final out of the inning.

The victory defied the pregame projection from Interstat, whose simulator had forecast a narrow 8-7 Arizona State win, though its ELO rating system gave the Sun Devils a 62.9% probability to win.

The two teams continue their series Saturday in Provo.
