Siena at Dartmouth
HANOVER, N.H. (Interstat) — The Dartmouth Big Green erupted for four runs in the sixth inning to overcome a late deficit and defeat the Siena Saints 5-3 in non-conference baseball Wednesday at Red Rolfe Field at Biondi Park.
The comeback victory improved Dartmouth’s record to 7-19, while Siena fell to 10-21.
The game’s pivotal shift came in the bottom of the sixth, transforming a pitchers’ duel into a rally. Siena starter Gio Conte had dominated through five innings, allowing just one earned run on no hits, walking two and striking out three. He was relieved by Handal to begin the sixth.
Stefan Di Corrado sparked the Big Green with a single, and Hunter Murray followed with a double to put runners on second and third. Taer Rodriguez then delivered the key blow, lacing a two-run single up the middle to tie the game at 3-3. After Rodriguez was caught stealing, the rally continued with a single by Sam Andersen and an RBI double from Jack Espiritu Niswonger to give Dartmouth its first lead at 4-3. Alejandro Puig capped the inning with another run-scoring single for the 5-3 advantage.
That outburst made a winner of Dartmouth starter Andrew Lombana, who turned in a stellar performance. The right-hander worked seven strong innings, allowing one earned run on four hits while striking out four and walking one. Nathan Matoush earned the save with 1 1/3 perfect innings of relief, including one strikeout.
Siena had built its lead with single runs in the first and fourth innings. In the first, they capitalized on Dartmouth starter Lombana without a hit, using two walks and a hit batter to load the bases before Scott Lynch was hit by a pitch to force in a run. Cole Hambly added an RBI groundout in the fourth to score John Paradine, who had been hit by a pitch.
The Saints threatened in the eighth against reliever Plummer, loading the bases with one out. Lynch smashed a two-run double to cut the deficit to 5-3, but Matoush entered and retired the next batter to escape further damage. Siena managed just one baserunner against Matoush in the ninth.
Lynch led Siena offensively, going 2-for-3 with two RBIs. Dartmouth’s Rodriguez finished 2-for-4 with two RBIs, while Di Corrado was 2-for-4 with an RBI.
Nolan Puglisi provided excellent relief for Siena, throwing two hitless innings with two strikeouts after the Big Green’s big sixth.
The result defied the projection from Interstat’s game simulator, which had forecast a 4-3 Siena victory, though the service’s ELO system gave Dartmouth a 63.1% probability to win.
Dartmouth next travels to face Harvard in a doubleheader Saturday. Siena begins a four-game series with Albany at home Friday.
