Connecticut at Boston College
NEWTON, Mass. (Interstat) — Nick Wang’s two-run home run in the seventh inning erased a late deficit and propelled the Boston College Eagles to an 8-5 victory over the Connecticut Huskies in a nonconference baseball game Wednesday at Eddie Pellagrini Diamond at John Shea Field.
The game, which began in the afternoon and concluded in the evening, saw the Eagles rally from an early five-run hole to sweep the two-game season series after a 26-19 win over the Huskies last month.
Connecticut struck immediately, plating five runs in the first two innings against Boston College starter Luke DAncona. Jackson Marshall’s RBI double in the first scored Tyler Minick, and the Huskies capitalized on a second-inning error by Eagles second baseman Ty Mainolfi. Peyton Jemison doubled home Maddix Dalena, who had reached on the miscue, to give the visitors a 5-0 advantage.
Boston College began chipping away in the bottom of the first. Julio Solier and Mainolfi led off with singles, and Wang grounded out to score Solier. Jack Toomey followed with a sacrifice fly to cut the lead to 5-2.
The Huskies extended their lead to 5-2 in the fourth on an RBI triple by Camden Righi, but the Eagles’ bullpen combination of Chase Hartsell, Peter Schaefer and Drew Grumbles stifled the Connecticut offense from the second through sixth innings, allowing just one unearned run.
Boston College’s offense came alive in the fifth against the Connecticut bullpen. Solier tripled home Colin Larson, and Mainolfi followed with an RBI double. Wang then singled to center to score Mainolfi, tying the game at 5.
Connecticut regained the lead in the top of the seventh against reliever Kyle Kipp. Nater Wachter walked, advanced on a passed ball and a sacrifice bunt, and scored on Jemison’s groundout. Dalena then scored on an error by first baseman Danny Surowiec to make it 7-5.
The lead was short-lived. In the bottom of the seventh, Mainolfi walked with one out. Wang then connected on a two-run homer, his 13th of the season, off reliever Greg Shaw III to tie the game. The Eagles continued to pressure, loading the bases before Cesar Gonzalez drove in the go-ahead run with a fielder’s choice. A balk and a walk reloaded the bases, but Connecticut reliever Drew Smith entered and induced an inning-ending fielder’s choice to limit the damage to three runs.
Boston College’s John D Mitchell and Connecticut’s Smith traded scoreless frames the rest of the way. Mitchell earned the win with two innings of two-hit relief, while Smith provided 1 1/3 scoreless innings for the Huskies.
Wang finished 2 for 5 with a home run and four RBIs, the key performance in the comeback. Mainolfi added two hits, a walk, two RBIs and three runs scored. For Connecticut, Jemison had two hits and two RBIs, while Righi contributed two hits and an RBI.
With the win, Boston College improved to 28-12. Connecticut fell to 20-18. The Eagles open a three-game home series with Duke on Friday, while the Huskies host Saint John’s for a three-game set beginning the same day.
