Jacksonville at Florida Gulf Coast
FORT MYERS, Fla. (Interstat) — Javier Gorostola broke out of a slump with two home runs and four RBIs, powering the Florida Gulf Coast Eagles to a 4-1 victory over the Jacksonville Dolphins in an ASUN conference baseball game Sunday evening at Swanson Stadium.
The win allowed the Eagles (21-13, 2-1 ASUN) to salvage the final game of the three-game series after dropping the first two to the Dolphins (17-18, 2-1). The game, which began in the afternoon and concluded under the lights, was dominated by pitching and defense until Gorostola’s third-inning swing changed the contest.
Jacksonville scratched across an unearned run in the top of the first inning without a hit. Leadoff batter Jonah Mummau walked, advanced to second on a double play and scored on a two-out error. That lone run held up through the early frames as Jacksonville starter Kyle Powers and Florida Gulf Coast starter Hunter Possehl traded zeroes.
Powers was sharp in a no-decision, working three perfect innings with one strikeout before being lifted. His counterpart, Possehl, was even better. The Eagles’ right-hander earned the win by tossing six strong innings, allowing four hits and one unearned run while striking out three.
The stalemate was shattered in the bottom of the third. With two outs and the bases empty, Jacksonville third baseman Anthony Baratta committed a throwing error, allowing Ian Gonzalez to reach second. A walk followed, setting the stage for Gorostola. The Eagles’ third baseman, who was hitless in nine at-bats in the series’ first two games, crushed a three-run homer to left field, his ninth of the season. All three runs were unearned due to the error.
Gorostola wasn’t finished. In the sixth inning, facing Dolphins reliever Payton Waters, he launched a solo shot to left, his 11th of the year, to extend the Eagles’ lead to 4-1. The four-RBI performance was a dramatic turnaround after his recent struggles.
Jacksonville’s only other scoring threat came in the sixth. Mummau singled and advanced to second on an error, later scoring on an RBI single by Derek Bermudez. Sam Grunberg followed with a double, but Possehl induced an inning-ending groundout to preserve the 4-1 lead.
The Dolphins managed just five hits total. Grunberg led the way, going 2 for 4 with a double. The Eagles’ bullpen sealed the win, as Mattox Meeks and Preston Rogers combined for 2 1/3 innings of hitless relief. Rogers recorded the final two outs for his first save.
The most important part of the game was unequivocally Gorostola’s third-inning, three-run homer. It transformed a tense, one-run pitchers’ duel into a multi-run lead for the Eagles, providing all the necessary offense against a Jacksonville pitching staff that otherwise allowed only six hits. The blast capitalized on a critical Jacksonville error and set the tone for the remainder of the series-deciding game.
Jacksonville’s relievers, Scout Updike, Waters and Grant Brooks, combined for five innings of one-run ball, but the early deficit proved too large to overcome.
The victory improved Florida Gulf Coast’s record in Fort Myers to 14-4 this season. Both teams return to non-conference action on Tuesday, with Jacksonville traveling to face UCF and Florida Gulf Coast visiting Florida Atlantic.
