Dartmouth at Cornell

ITHACA, N.Y. (Interstat) — Owen Carlson’s tie-breaking single and a subsequent wild pitch sparked a decisive two-run rally in the seventh inning, lifting the Cornell Big Red to a 4-2 victory over the Dartmouth Big Green in the first game of an Ivy League doubleheader on Saturday at Hoy Field.

The win improved Cornell to 6-16 overall, while Dartmouth fell to 4-16.

The game’s pivotal shift came in the bottom of the seventh, erasing the lead Dartmouth had just reclaimed. Henry Murray had put the Big Green ahead 2-1 in the top of the sixth with a two-run homer to right field, scoring Nico Banez.

Cornell answered immediately in its half of the sixth, tying the game on an RBI single from Jake Hower. The Big Red then broke the deadlock an inning later against Dartmouth reliever Mac Burke. With two outs and runners on first and second, Carlson lined his third hit of the day up the middle, scoring Jayden Shin. Carlson then took second on a wild pitch, which also allowed John L. to race home from third, extending Cornell’s lead to 4-2.

The comeback secured a win for Cornell starter Ethan Hamill, who rebounded strongly from a difficult outing earlier in the week. Hamill earned the victory, working six innings and allowing two runs on four hits with four strikeouts. His performance stood in contrast to his previous start on March 30, when he surrendered seven runs to Harvard.

John Hegarty was dominant in relief for the Big Red, closing out the final three innings to earn the save. Hegarty allowed just one hit and struck out four, retiring nine of the ten batters he faced.

Dartmouth starter Nate Isler took the loss despite a solid effort. He was charged with all four Cornell runs over 6 1/3 innings, though only two were earned. He allowed seven hits and struck out four. The Big Green defense committed a costly error in the sixth that led to the tying run.

Cornell outhit Dartmouth 7-5. Carlson led the Big Red offense, going 3-for-4 with two RBIs. Murray was the standout for Dartmouth, finishing 2-for-4 and accounting for all of his team’s runs with his home run.

The Big Red twice grounded into double plays to stifle potential rallies, while Dartmouth’s offense managed only one hit after the sixth inning against Hegarty.

The game was the second of a three-game weekend series between the Ivy League foes. Cornell defeated Dartmouth 8-1 in the series opener on Friday.

The teams were scheduled to conclude the doubleheader later Saturday.
