Toledo at Ohio State

COLUMBUS, Ohio (Interstat) — Alex Bemis launched a three-run home run in the seventh inning Tuesday night, capping a comeback from a five-run deficit and propelling the Ohio State Buckeyes to a 10-5 victory over the Toledo Rockets at Bill Davis Stadium.

The Buckeyes (14-13) trailed 5-0 after the top of the second inning but chipped away before Bemis’ decisive blast off Toledo reliever Braden Curry broke a 5-5 tie. The left fielder finished 1 for 5 with three RBIs.

Toledo (12-15) struck early and hard. Shortstop Charlie Scholvin led the game off with a solo home run in the first inning. The Rockets then batted around in the second, scoring four runs on three hits, two walks and two hit batters. Scholvin drew a bases-loaded walk in the frame and later added a two-run single in the sixth, finishing 2 for 4 with a home run and four RBIs.

Ohio State’s comeback began in the fourth against Toledo starter Cole Giesige, who had been sharp through three hitless innings. The Buckeyes capitalized on two Toledo errors to plate five unearned runs, tying the game. Henry Kaczmar’s two-run single was the key hit, scoring Grant Mangrum and Bemis, who had both reached on throwing errors.

The game remained tied until the bottom of the seventh. Lee Ellis, who went 2 for 4 with two RBIs, singled and stole both second and third. After two strikeouts, Bemis connected on his three-run homer to center field, scoring Ellis and Miles Vandenheuvel to give Ohio State a 9-5 lead.

The Buckeyes added an insurance run in the eighth on an RBI groundout by Ellis. Ohio State’s bullpen combination of Zach Weber and Andrew Edrington sealed the win, combining for two perfect innings with five strikeouts. Weber struck out two in the eighth.

Despite being outhit 8-7, Ohio State leveraged 11 walks and three Toledo errors. The Rockets’ bullpen, after Giesige’s three-inning start, saw scoreless outings from Michael Fliss, Sam Rufenacht and Arturo Ormaza before the Buckeyes broke through in the seventh.

The victory moved Ohio State above .500 on the season, while Toledo fell to three games under. The Buckeyes are scheduled to open a three-game series against Maryland on Friday. Toledo will host Eastern Michigan in a three-game set beginning Thursday.

The game’s outcome defied a pregame projection from Interstat’s game simulator, which had predicted a 7-4 Ohio State win, though the Buckeyes’ estimated win probability of 60.8% proved accurate.
