Preview: Delaware Blue Hens at Rutgers Scarlet Knights
PISCATAWAY, N.J. (Interstat) — The Rutgers Scarlet Knights look to continue their momentum from a strong conference road win when they host the Delaware Blue Hens in non-conference baseball action Tuesday evening at Bainton Field.
First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m. under cloudy skies with temperatures around 44 degrees.
Rutgers (13-10) arrives after taking one of three games at Illinois, including an 8-3 victory Sunday. The Scarlet Knights’ bullpen was pivotal in that win, with reliever Chris Sand tossing 4 2/3 hitless innings. Sand, a key player to watch, has been effective in three of his last four outings, including that scoreless stretch against the Fighting Illini.
Delaware (10-14) seeks to rebound from a tough weekend series loss to Dallas Baptist, which concluded with a 10-inning, 8-6 defeat on Sunday. The Blue Hens showed late fight in that loss, with Noah Burroughs hitting a two-run homer.
A player to watch for Delaware is reliever Ben Moyzan. Over his last five appearances, Moyzan has been scored upon only twice, posting four outings with no earned runs allowed. He was sharp in Sunday’s loss, throwing 2 2/3 innings of one-hit, scoreless relief with three strikeouts.
The midweek matchup features teams heading in opposite directions recently. Rutgers has won five of its last eight games, while Delaware has dropped seven of its last ten.
According to Interstat’s game simulator, this contest projects to be close, with a predicted final score of Rutgers 6, Delaware 5.
Following this game, Rutgers will prepare for a Big Ten home series against Michigan starting Friday. Delaware will open a three-game set against Kennesaw State on Friday.
