Tennessee Tech at Vanderbilt

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (Interstat) — Mike Mancini drove in three runs on three hits and the Vanderbilt offense erupted for 18 hits in a 15-5 victory over Tennessee Tech on Tuesday afternoon at Ken Dugan Field at Stephen Lee Marsh Stadium.

The Commodores (14-12) overcame an early five-run deficit, scoring in five consecutive innings to snap a four-game losing streak. The Golden Eagles fell to 9-16.

Tennessee Tech stunned the home crowd by striking immediately. Manny Garza launched a solo home run to left field in the top of the first inning, providing an early edge. The Golden Eagles extended their lead to 5-0 in the fourth, capitalizing on a wild pitch and an RBI single from Garza, who finished 3 for 4 with a home run and two RBIs.

Vanderbilt’s response began in the second inning. A wild pitch allowed Logan Johnston to score, and Korbin Reynolds followed with an RBI single. Mancini then doubled to left to drive in Reynolds, cutting the deficit to 5-3.

The Commodores seized control with a three-run fourth inning to tie the game. Ryker Waite tripled and scored on Reynolds’ triple. Mancini then delivered another double, this time down the left-field line, to plate Reynolds and knot the score at 5-5. Davis Holcomb’s RBI double later in the frame gave Vanderbilt its first lead at 6-5.

The most important part of the game came in the fifth inning, when Vanderbilt broke it open by sending 10 batters to the plate and scoring five runs. The Commodores loaded the bases with one out before Matt Johnston’s single up the middle tied the game. After another walk reloaded the bases, Colin Barczi delivered a two-run single up the middle. Logan Johnston and Troy Rigdon added RBI hits to cap the outburst, stretching the lead to 11-5 and putting the game out of reach.

Vanderbilt added two runs in the sixth on an RBI double from Waite and a run-scoring single from Mancini, and tacked on two unearned runs in the eighth for the final margin.

Mancini, who entered the game in a 1-for-9 slump over his previous three contests, was the catalyst, going 3 for 4 with a walk, two doubles and three RBIs. Waite also had three hits, including two doubles and a triple, and drove in a run. Reynolds added two hits and two RBIs.

Five Vanderbilt relievers combined for 4 2/3 scoreless innings after starter Bryce Hamilton allowed five runs over 3 2/3 innings. Nate Schlote, Tristan Bristow, Nate Teague and Tyler Baird all contributed hitless outings, with Baird striking out two in the eighth.

For Tennessee Tech, relievers Carson Davis and Justin Fallon provided bright spots. Davis threw 1 1/3 perfect innings in the second and third, and Fallon struck out two in 1 2/3 scoreless frames.

The offensive output defied the pregame projection from Interstat, whose game simulator had forecast a 4-2 Vanderbilt victory. The Commodores’ 85.6% win probability per the ELO system proved accurate, though the final score was far more lopsided than anticipated.
