Boston College at Northeastern
BROOKLINE, Mass. (Interstat) — Luke D’Ancona and two relievers combined for 8 1/3 hitless innings out of the bullpen, and the Boston College Eagles executed a pair of ninth-inning sacrifice bunts to secure a 3-2 victory over the Northeastern Huskies in a tense, well-pitched non-conference game Tuesday evening at Parsons Field.
The most important part of the game unfolded in the bottom of the third inning. With Boston College leading 1-0, Northeastern loaded the bases with one out against Eagles starter Jacob Burnham. Mike Feinberg delivered a single to shallow right field, scoring Alex Ruggiero to tie the game and keeping the bases loaded. Burnham then struck out Jack Brinker, but was lifted for D’Ancona with the go-ahead run just 90 feet away.
D’Ancona, a right-hander, entered and immediately induced a wild pitch. The chaos, however, worked in Boston College’s favor. As two runners advanced, Boston College catcher Ryan Larson retrieved the ball and threw to D’Ancona covering home, who tagged out a sliding Danny Walsh attempting to score from third. D’Ancona then struck out Cam Musacchia to end the threat, preserving a 1-1 tie and extinguishing Northeastern’s best offensive opportunity until the final frame.
From that point, the Eagles’ bullpen dominated. D’Ancona was brilliant, firing 3 2/3 perfect innings, striking out six of the 11 batters he faced. Sean Hard followed with two perfect innings and four strikeouts. Their collective effort allowed Boston College to slowly rebuild its lead.
The Eagles broke the deadlock in the fifth. Larson walked, advanced to second on a Julio Solier single, and scored on a two-out single by Joe Wang. That 2-1 lead felt immense as the Huskies managed only one baserunner—a hit batter—against D’Ancona and Hard from the fourth through the eighth innings.
Boston College added a critical insurance run in the top of the ninth against Northeastern reliever Andrew Rogovic. Pinch-runner Matt DeShazo walked, took second on a sacrifice bunt by Alex Gonzalez, advanced to third on a wild pitch, and scored on a perfectly placed safety squeeze bunt by Solier, giving the Eagles a 3-1 cushion.
That run proved decisive. In the bottom of the ninth, Boston College closer Kyle Kipp entered and immediately struck out Mike Tarantino. After a walk and a sacrifice bunt, he hit Ruggiero with a pitch. Walsh then singled to left, scoring a run to cut the deficit to 3-2 and bringing the potential winning run to the plate. Kipp, however, regrouped and struck out leadoff hitter Greg Ty swinging to end the game.
Solier led the Boston College offense with two hits, including a triple, an RBI and a run scored. Luke Gallo added an RBI single. The Eagles managed six hits but leveraged three sacrifice hits to manufacture runs.
For Northeastern, starter Cooper Maher was effective in a no-decision, allowing one run on four hits over four innings of relief. The Huskies were held to just four hits total, with Feinberg’s third-inning single providing their only RBI until Walsh’s ninth-inning hit.
With the win, Boston College improved to 17-8. Northeastern fell to 12-10. The Eagles are scheduled to host Merrimack on Wednesday, while the Huskies travel to face Massachusetts-Lowell.
