Ohio State at Wright State
DAYTON, Ohio (Interstat) — In a back-and-forth midweek contest defined by offensive surges and a pivotal late-inning rally, the Wright State Raiders outlasted the Ohio State Buckeyes 10-8 on Tuesday evening at Woerner Field.
The game, which began in the afternoon and concluded under the lights, saw the Raiders erase an early four-run deficit, rally to tie the game in the sixth, and finally pull ahead for good with a two-run eighth inning. The victory improved Wright State to 9-12 on the season, while Ohio State fell to 10-13.
The Buckeyes struck first, capitalizing on Wright State’s shaky start. In the top of the second inning, Ohio State loaded the bases with no outs against Raiders starter Ryan Butler. Miles Vandenheuvel delivered a two-run single up the middle, scoring Dane Harvey and Maddix Simpson. Steven Cavaco later scored on a sacrifice fly by Alex Bemis, and Vandenheuvel came home on a wild pitch, staking the Buckeyes to a 4-0 lead.
Wright State responded immediately and emphatically in the bottom of the first, sending ten batters to the plate against Ohio State starter Luke Carrell. The Raiders scored four runs on five hits, including an RBI double from Peltier and run-scoring singles from Duncan and Gregory. A bases-loaded single by Manley capped the outburst, tying the game before an out was recorded.
Ohio State reclaimed the lead in the third on an RBI single from Harvey that scored Noah Furcht, and extended it in the fourth. After a two-out error by Wright State extended the inning, Mason Eckelman cleared the bases with a two-run single, making it 8-6 Buckeyes.
The Raiders chipped away, with Fultz driving in a run in the third to make it 8-6. Then, in the bottom of the sixth, they completed their comeback. With two on and two out, Manley again came through, lacing a two-run single to left field that scored Peltier and Turner, knotting the game at 8.
The most important sequence of the game occurred in the bottom of the eighth. With the score still tied, Wright State’s Turner led off with a walk, stole second, and advanced to third on a walk. With one out, Manley lifted a sacrifice fly to center, giving the Raiders their first lead of the afternoon at 9-8. The inning continued as Holmstrom and Blomquist walked to reload the bases, and Hunter Warren drew another walk to force in an insurance run.
Ohio State threatened in the seventh, loading the bases with one out, but could not score. In the ninth, Eckelman walked to bring the tying run to the plate, but Raiders reliever Bilo closed the door, striking out Harvey and Cavaco around a lineout to seal the victory.
Offensively, Ohio State collected 11 hits, led by Henry Kaczmar and Dane Harvey, who each had three hits. Harvey and Eckelman each drove in two runs. Wright State’s 14-hit attack was more balanced, with Warren, Fultz, Duncan, Peltier, Holmstrom, and Manley all recording multiple hits. Manley led the way with four RBIs.
The result defied the pregame projection from Interstat’s game simulator, which had forecast a 5-4 Ohio State victory, though the site’s ELO system had given Wright State a 60.4% probability to win.
Ohio State returns home to begin a four-game series with Minnesota on Wednesday. Wright State opens a three-game Horizon League series against Oakland on Friday.
