Texas Christian at Arizona State

PHOENIX (Interstat) — Kole Klecker delivered a masterful performance on the mound, and the Arizona State Sun Devils capitalized on early opportunities to secure a series victory with a 4-0 win over the Texas Christian Horned Frogs in a Big 12 conference game Sunday evening at Phoenix Municipal Stadium.

The game, a stark contrast to the offensive explosions of the first two meetings in the series, was defined by Klecker’s dominance. The Sun Devils’ starter pitched seven shutout innings, allowing only two hits and striking out seven. He walked one and did not allow an earned run, thoroughly stifling a TCU lineup that had produced 13 runs over the previous two games.

Arizona State improved to 14-5 overall, while TCU fell to 11-8.

The most important part of the game was Klecker’s ability to neutralize every potential TCU threat and the Sun Devils’ early execution with runners in scoring position. TCU’s only serious scoring chance came in the third inning. Jack Bell doubled and advanced to third on an error, but was thrown out at the plate on Sawyer Strosnider’s fielder’s choice. Klecker then ended the inning with a strikeout, a pattern he repeated throughout his outing.

The Sun Devils provided all the offense needed in the second and third innings against TCU starter Trever Baumler. In the second, Dean Toigo and Dominic Smaldino hit consecutive singles. Brody Briggs followed with a sacrifice fly to right field, scoring Toigo for a 1-0 lead.

An inning later, the Sun Devils manufactured another run. Austen Roellig singled, advanced to second on a wild pitch, and scored on Smaldino’s two-out single to left field, making it 2-0.

Arizona State extended its lead in the fourth when Landon Hairston launched his eighth home run of the season, a solo shot to deep right field off Baumler. Baumler took the loss, allowing three earned runs on five hits over five innings. He walked two and struck out two.

Walter Quinn provided two scoreless innings of relief for TCU, but the Sun Devils added a final insurance run in the eighth off reliever Zack James. Toigo led off the inning with his eighth homer of the year, a solo blast to center field for the 4-0 final.

The Sun Devils’ bullpen preserved the shutout. Sean Fitzpatrick struck out two in a perfect eighth inning, and Derek Schaefer worked a 1-2-3 ninth.

TCU’s offense was limited to just two singles—by Bell in the third and Lucas Franco in the fifth—and four baserunners total. The Horned Frogs went 0-for-4 with runners in scoring position and left four men on base.

The victory gave Arizona State the series win, two games to one, after the teams split the first two high-scoring contests. The result defied the pregame projections from Interstat, whose game simulator had predicted an 8-7 TCU victory and whose ELO system gave the Horned Frogs a 55.6% probability to win.

Arizona State next hosts Grand Canyon on Tuesday. TCU returns home to face New Mexico State, also on Tuesday.
