Texas-Arlington at Texas-San Antonio
SAN ANTONIO (Interstat) — Drew Detlefsen homered twice and drove in four runs, powering a relentless offensive display by Texas-San Antonio in a 15-8 victory over Texas-Arlington on Sunday afternoon at Roadrunner Field.
The win allowed the Roadrunners to salvage the final game of a three-game series after dropping the first two to their in-state rivals. Texas-San Antonio improved to 15-5 overall, while the Mavericks fell to 7-12.
The most important sequence of the game came in the bottom of the sixth inning, erasing what had been a commanding Texas-Arlington lead. The Mavericks had erupted for eight runs in the top of the fifth to take an 8-6 advantage, but the Roadrunners responded immediately.
Facing new pitcher Zach Evans in the sixth, Christian Hallmark singled and Caden Miller walked. After a sacrifice bunt, Diego Diaz launched a three-run homer to deep left field, putting Texas-San Antonio back in front 9-8. Detlefsen followed on the very next pitch with a solo shot to nearly the same spot, extending the lead to 10-8 and igniting the home crowd. The back-to-back homers completely shifted the momentum, and the Roadrunners never trailed again.
Detlefsen, who had been held to one RBI in the first two games of the series, finished 3 for 5. His first homer was a three-run blast in the second inning that sparked an early comeback from a 6-0 deficit.
Texas-Arlington’s big fifth inning was fueled by defensive miscues. With two on and one out, Xavier Melendez hit an RBI single, and a fielding error allowed the runners to advance. Zach Mazoch then cleared the bases with a three-run double. Later in the inning, an error by Roadrunners first baseman Cade Sadler allowed another run to score, and Caylon Dygert capped the rally with a two-run double, making it 8-6.
Merek Sears provided a bright spot for the Mavericks in relief, entering with two on and no outs in the third inning. He stranded both inherited runners and pitched three perfect innings, striking out four.
The Roadrunners’ bullpen, however, proved decisive. After starter Kendall Dove allowed six runs, only three earned, over 4 1/3 innings, Sam Simmons and Christian Okerholm combined for 5 1/3 innings of strong relief. Simmons earned the win, allowing two runs on three hits over 3 2/3 innings. Okerholm pitched a scoreless ninth to seal it.
Texas-San Antonio added insurance with four runs in the seventh, aided by two more Mavericks errors, and a final run in the eighth on an RBI double by Hallmark.
The Roadrunners out-hit the Mavericks 13 to 11. Mazoch led Texas-Arlington with three RBIs, while Dygert drove in two.
The result defied the pregame projection from Interstat, which gave Texas-San Antonio a 79.2% probability to win but had projected a lower-scoring 7-3 final.
Texas-San Antonio travels to face Houston Christian on Tuesday. Texas-Arlington returns home to host Stephen F. Austin on Tuesday.
