Texas-San Antonio at Texas Tech

LUBBOCK, Texas (Interstat) — Andrew Stucky’s three-run homer capped a decisive four-run sixth inning, and Texas-San Antonio survived a furious rally from Texas Tech to secure a 9-8 victory Tuesday night at Dan Law Field at Rip Griffin Park.

The Roadrunners, who entered the game with one of the nation’s best records, improved to 14-2, while the Red Raiders fell to 10-5.

The game’s most critical sequence came in the top of the sixth inning with UTSA leading 4-2. After Caden Miller led off the frame with a solo home run to left field, the Roadrunners put two more runners on base for Stucky. The catcher, who had driven in a run with a sacrifice fly in the first inning, connected on a three-run blast to left field, extending the UTSA lead to 9-2 and seemingly putting the game out of reach.

Stucky finished 1 for 4 with four RBIs, rebounding from an 0-for-4 performance in his previous game. His home run provided the necessary cushion to withstand Texas Tech’s immediate and sustained response.

The Red Raiders answered with five runs in the bottom of the sixth, sending 10 batters to the plate and capitalizing on a pitching change. Jesse Rusinek and Damian Villeneuve delivered RBI singles, Kellen Thompson added a run-scoring hit, and Owen Shouse and TJ Hughes each drove in a run to cut the deficit to 9-7. The inning was prolonged by a key two-out error that allowed an unearned run to score.

Texas Tech threatened again in the ninth against UTSA reliever Sam Simmons. Hughes led off with a walk, advanced to third on a single, and scored on a sacrifice fly by Anthony Quintanar to make it 9-8. With the tying run at first, Simmons struck out Rusinek to end the game, stranding the potential tying run.

UTSA’s offense was powered by 13 hits, including a 4-for-5 night with an RBI from Lane Haworth and Miller’s two-hit, two-RBI performance. The Roadrunners built an early lead with single runs in the first, second and third innings, adding another in the fourth on an RBI single from Haworth.

Texas Tech’s 12-hit attack was led by Rusinek, who went 3 for 4 with two RBIs and two stolen bases. The Red Raiders left the bases loaded in the fourth inning and stranded nine runners overall.

The Roadrunners’ bullpen combination of Gunnar Brown, Christopher Gutierrez and Simmons was crucial after starter Sam Simmons pitched four innings of two-run ball. For Texas Tech, reliever Bryce Suiter provided three perfect innings of relief with four strikeouts to keep his team within striking distance late.

The teams will conclude their two-game midweek series Wednesday afternoon in Lubbock.
