Wright State at Tennessee

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (Interstat) — Reese Chapman’s three RBIs and a strong start from Landon Mack propelled Tennessee to a 5-4 victory over Wright State on Saturday at Lindsey Nelson Stadium, clinching the weekend series.

The Volunteers (12-3) overcame an early two-run deficit, powered by timely hitting from the middle of their order, while their bullpen slammed the door over the final four innings to secure the win. The Raiders fell to 4-8 with their second straight one-run loss to open the series.

Wright State struck quickly against Mack, Tennessee’s starter, in the first inning. Julian Gregory walked and Jake Duncan doubled to put two in scoring position. Andrew Warren’s groundout brought home Gregory, and after a walk, Braylen Blomquist drove in Duncan with a fielder’s choice to give the Raiders a 2-0 lead before Mack could record the third out.

Tennessee began its response in the second inning when Chapman led off with a solo home run to right field, cutting the deficit in half. The Volunteers then seized control with a four-run outburst in the fourth and fifth innings.

In the fourth, Blake Grimmer walked and Griffin Wright doubled to set the table for Chapman. The right fielder delivered a two-run double to right, scoring both runners and putting Tennessee ahead 3-2.

The lead expanded an inning later. After a walk to Jay Abernathy, third baseman Henry Ford connected for a two-run homer to left field, extending the Volunteers’ advantage to 5-2. The five-run stretch across the two innings proved decisive.

Wright State chipped away in the sixth against reliever Cam Appenzeller. Warren doubled and later scored on a groundout by Luke Fultz. Blomquist, who had singled, came home on an RBI single by Sam Turner, pulling the Raiders within 5-4.

That was as close as they would get. Tennessee reliever Brayden Krenzel entered in the eighth and dominated, striking out four over two perfect innings to earn the save. He closed the game by getting the final three Raiders in order in the ninth.

Mack (1-0) earned the win, allowing two runs on three hits over five innings, striking out five. Wright State starter Griffen Paige (0-2) took the loss, surrendering five runs on nine hits in four-plus innings.

Chapman finished 3 for 4 with the home run, a double and three RBIs, continuing a hot streak that has seen him collect seven hits in his last three games. Ford also had three hits, including his two-run blast. Blomquist led Wright State with two hits and an RBI.

The most critical sequence of the game was Tennessee’s two-out rally in the fourth inning. With runners on second and third, Chapman’s double off Paige flipped the score and the momentum permanently in the Volunteers’ favor, setting the stage for Ford’s insurance homer in the next frame.

The series concludes Sunday afternoon at Lindsey Nelson Stadium.
