Boston College at Miami (FL)

CORAL GABLES, Fla. (Interstat) — Rob Evans delivered a dominant seven-inning start and the Miami (FL) Hurricanes used a pair of solo home runs to secure a 5-3 victory over the Boston College Eagles in Atlantic Coast Conference baseball action Saturday at Mark Light Field at Alex Rodriguez Park.

The win improved the No. 8-ranked Hurricanes to 12-3 overall and evened the weekend series at one game apiece after Boston College’s 8-7 win on Friday. The Eagles fell to 8-6.

The most important part of the game was Evans’ command on the mound, which stifled the Eagles’ offense for the majority of the contest. Coming off a rough outing against Florida last week where he allowed five earned runs, the right-hander rebounded powerfully. He limited Boston College to just two hits and one earned run while striking out eight, effectively neutralizing the Eagles after their explosive offensive performance the previous night.

Miami’s offense provided all the support Evans would need in a chaotic first inning against Boston College starter Tyler Mudd. After a scoreless top half, the Hurricanes capitalized on a costly error. With two on and one out, Miami catcher Alex Sosa reached on a fielding error by left fielder Sam DeShazo, allowing Daniel Torres to score. Two walks, one with the bases loaded, and a sacrifice fly by Dylan Dubovik brought in two more runs, staking Miami to an early 3-0 lead despite recording only two hits in the frame.

Boston College answered in the second. Jack Toomey led off with a double and later scored on a groundout by Vince Gallo, cutting the deficit to 3-1.

The Hurricanes then extended their lead with back-to-back solo shots in the middle innings. Sosa atoned for his earlier error-driven plate appearance by launching his sixth home run of the season to right field in the third inning. An inning later, Dubovik connected for his fifth homer, a deep drive to left field, making it 5-1.

That score held into the eighth inning as Evans continued to cruise. After he departed, Boston College mounted its only serious threat against reliever Jake Dorn. With two outs and none on, Patrick Solier and Joe Mainolfi hit back-to-back singles. Nick Wang then sliced a two-run double to left-center, scoring both runners and pulling the Eagles within two at 5-3. The rally was abruptly halted, however, when Wang was caught stealing third base for the inning’s final out.

Miami turned to Packy BradleyCooney for the ninth, and he retired the side in order on three groundouts to seal the victory.

While Evans was the standout, Boston College received excellent relief work to stay within reach. After Mudd allowed five runs, only one earned, over four innings, John D Mitchell and Luke D’Ancona combined for four perfect innings of relief, striking out five. The Eagles managed only five hits total, with Wang’s two-RBI double representing their key hit.

The Hurricanes finished with six hits, two for extra bases. The series finale is scheduled for Sunday.
