Queens (NC) at Georgia

ATHENS, Ga. (Interstat) — Dylan Vigue dominated with a career-high 11 strikeouts over seven one-hit innings, and the Georgia offense launched four home runs in an 11-0 victory over Queens (N.C.) in the first game of a doubleheader Saturday at Foley Field.

The game, which began after a rain and lightning delay, was a showcase for the 14th-ranked Bulldogs, who improved to 14-3. The Royals fell to 4-11.

Vigue, a right-hander, was the story from the outset. He struck out the side in the first inning and allowed only a two-out double to Thomas Mathay in the sixth. He walked one and faced just two batters over the minimum, retiring the final four hitters he faced. The performance was a sharp rebound from his previous start on March 1 against Oakland, where he allowed two earned runs in 4 1/3 innings.

Georgia’s offense provided more than enough support, racking up 13 hits. The Bulldogs took a 1-0 lead in the first inning when Jack Arcamone homered to center field off Royals starter Matthew Eagen.

They extended the lead to 3-0 in the second. After a double play nearly ended the threat, catcher Brennan Hudson hit a two-run, inside-the-park home run to center field, scoring Kolby Branch.

Eagen lasted five innings for Queens, allowing six earned runs on seven hits. His outing unraveled in the fifth when Tre Phelps hit a two-run homer to left-center, scoring Hudson and pushing the Georgia lead to 6-0.

The Bulldogs broke the game open with a five-run seventh inning against reliever Owen Shipman. Cole Johnson drove in a run with a single, and three batters later, Branch launched a three-run homer to left-center, capping the scoring at 11-0.

Arcamone added a solo home run in the sixth, giving him two hits and two RBIs. Phelps and Hudson also finished with two hits and two RBIs apiece. Every Georgia starter reached base at least once.

The most important sequence of the game came in the bottom of the seventh inning. Leading 8-0, Georgia loaded the bases with one out. Johnson’s RBI single made it 9-0, but the critical blow came from Branch, whose three-run homer invoked the 10-run rule common in college doubleheaders, effectively and decisively ending any remote chance of a Royals rally and setting a final margin that exceeded Interstat’s pregame projection of a 7-3 Georgia win.

Queens managed only Mathay’s double against Vigue. Three relievers combined to work the final two innings for Georgia, preserving the shutout.

The victory was Georgia’s second straight over Queens to open the series, following a 12-2 win on Friday. The teams were scheduled to conclude the doubleheader and the three-game series later Saturday.
