Seahawks Slug Dolphins to Even Series Behind Williford’s Stellar Relief
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (Interstat) — UNC Wilmington blasted two first-inning home runs and pulled away late for a 9-4 victory over Jacksonville on Saturday afternoon at John Sessions Stadium, splitting the weekend series.
Kevin Jones and Jake Bechtel hit back-to-back homers in the top of the first to immediately stake the Seahawks to a lead. The Dolphins cut into it with Sam Grunberg’s two-run homer in the second, but UNC Wilmington broke it open with a four-run sixth inning, capitalizing on Jacksonville mistakes with three unearned runs.
Reliever Trey Williford starred for the Seahawks, throwing 3 1/3 perfect innings with four strikeouts to stifle any Dolphins rally. Jacksonville outhit UNC Wilmington 11-10 but grounded into two double plays. Roger Vergara drove in two runs for the Dolphins.
The Seahawks improved to 7-5. The Dolphins fell to 9-5. The teams conclude their three-game series Sunday.
