TAMPA, Fla. (Interstat) — The South Florida Bulls, riding a strong start to the season, will look to continue their momentum when they host the struggling Southern Jaguars in the first game of a doubleheader on Saturday.
First pitch at USF Baseball Stadium is set for Saturday afternoon, though forecasts call for rain and a temperature of 78 degrees.
The Bulls (10-3) enter with a significant edge in record over the Jaguars (3-8). South Florida is coming off a 12-4 midweek victory over Stetson on Tuesday, while Southern is looking to rebound from a 14-5 home loss to McNeese State on the same day.
A player to watch for the Jaguars is outfielder Kameron Byrd. He homered and drove in two runs in the loss to McNeese State and is 6 for 22 (.273) with a home run and seven RBIs over his last eight games. For the Bulls, shortstop Jevin Relaford is a key bat. He went 1 for 1 with two RBIs against Stetson and is batting .333 (10 for 30) with seven RBIs in his last nine contests.
The teams opened their series on Friday, with South Florida shutting out Southern.
The Bulls’ recent success includes a series win at UCF last weekend, taking two of three games. Southern has lost four of its last five, with its only win in that stretch a 10-8 victory over Morehead State on Feb. 28.
Interstat’s game simulator projects a 7-3 victory for South Florida.
Following the doubleheader, South Florida will travel to face Jacksonville on Monday. Southern’s next series is at Florida A&M beginning March 13.
