Wofford at Belmont

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (Interstat) — Andrew Mannelly hit a tiebreaking solo home run in the eighth inning and drove in four runs to lead the Wofford Terriers to an 11-8 victory over the Belmont Bruins in a back-and-forth nonconference baseball game Friday night at Ken Dugan Field at Stephen Lee Marsh Stadium.

The Terriers (9-4) blew an early four-run lead, then rallied from a three-run deficit before Mannelly’s late heroics secured the win. The Bruins fell to 5-9.

Belmont stormed back from a 4-0 first-inning hole with a four-run outburst in the bottom of the first. After Charlie Davis doubled and scored on Cavan McMeans’ single, Jake Maddox drove in another run before Jon Whitworth launched a two-run homer to tie the game.

Wofford reclaimed the lead with a three-run fourth inning, highlighted by a two-run double from Harrison Campi. The Terriers then broke the game open with a five-run sixth, capitalizing on two Belmont errors. Mannelly delivered the key blow, a two-run single that scored David Tribble and Anthony Brini to extend the lead to 10-5.

The most important part of the game came in the bottom of the seventh, as Belmont mounted a fierce rally to get back within striking distance. Trailing 10-5, the Bruins scored three times on four consecutive hits with two outs. McMeans doubled, Brody Langlotz followed with a two-run double, and Maddox singled him home to cut the deficit to 10-8 and bring the tying run to the plate.

Wofford reliever Champ Davis, who entered with no outs in the sixth, finally ended the threat by striking out Whitworth. Davis earned the win with four innings of relief, allowing three earned runs on five hits while striking out six.

Mannelly provided critical insurance in the next half-inning, leading off the eighth with his home run to left field off reliever Andrew Perry to push the lead back to three runs. The right fielder finished 2 for 3 with a walk, four RBIs and two runs scored, continuing a strong stretch at the plate.

Kenny Michaels started for Wofford and lasted five innings, giving up five earned runs on seven hits while striking out six. Hunter Herndon added three hits for the Terriers, who finished with 11 hits.

Belmont’s offense was led by McMeans and Maddox, who each had three hits and two RBIs. Langlotz also drove in two runs. Starter Tate Marland took the loss, allowing four earned runs over 3 1/3 innings. Reliever Cole Kenyon provided a bright spot for the Bruins with a scoreless ninth inning.

The game surpassed the projection from Interstat’s game simulator, which had forecast a 7-3 Wofford victory. The Terriers’ win probability was pegged at 64.7% by the service’s ELO system pregame.

The teams continue their three-game series Saturday.
