UNC Wilmington at North Carolina A&T

GREENSBORO (Interstat) — The North Carolina A&T Aggies avoided a series sweep Sunday, defeating the UNC Wilmington Seahawks 7-2 in an afternoon and evening contest at War Memorial Stadium.

The Aggies improved to 13-36 overall after dropping the first two games of the three-game set, including a 10-7 loss Saturday and an 18-2 defeat Friday. UNC Wilmington fell to 27-21.

UNC Wilmington jumped ahead in the top of the first inning without the benefit of a hit. After Tyrrell popped out and Lucas flied out, Hughes walked. Jones then reached on a throwing error by third baseman JT Taylor, allowing Hughes to score from first. Jones advanced to second on the play. Danny singled through the right side to drive in Jones, giving the Seahawks a 2-0 lead.

The Aggies answered in the bottom half. Center fielder Nick DiCarlo led off with a double to right center. Right fielder Bruce Wyche followed with an RBI double to right field, scoring DiCarlo.

North Carolina A&T tied the game in the second inning. Allen singled, advanced to second on a groundout, then stole third and scored on a throwing error by catcher Martinez.

The score remained 2-2 through five innings as both starting pitchers settled in. Seahawks starter Connor Marshburn worked 5 1/3 innings, allowing two runs but no hits. He struck out two and walked none. Aggies starter Angel Ortiz was sharper, tossing 6 1/3 innings, surrendering four hits but no earned runs while striking out four.

Ortiz’s outing was a bounce-back performance after his previous start May 3 against Campbell, where he allowed five earned runs in three innings.

The game turned in the bottom of the sixth. With the score tied, Seahawks reliever Clay Masonis entered and issued walks to Allen and Amaro. After Tuggle flied out, DiCarlo stepped to the plate and delivered a two-run double to left field, scoring Allen and Amaro to put the Aggies ahead 4-2.

UNC Wilmington threatened in the seventh. Pennella led off with a ground-rule double, and Thompson walked. But Aggies reliever Kobie Cushing entered and induced a fielder’s choice and a strikeout to escape the inning.

The Aggies added three insurance runs in the eighth. Taylor led off with a double, advanced to third on a wild pitch, then scored on a wild pitch after Tuggle walked. With two outs, Gomez scored on another wild pitch, and Bradshaw was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to force in the seventh run.

Cushing worked 1 2/3 innings, allowing one hit and no earned runs with one strikeout. Diego Barrett pitched a scoreless ninth.

Offensively, Wyche went 3 for 5 with an RBI and a double. DiCarlo finished 2 for 4 with two RBIs and a double.

UNC Wilmington managed only five hits. Pennella had the Seahawks’ only extra-base hit, a ground-rule double. Marshburn was charged with two earned runs despite not allowing a hit.

The Seahawks next host North Carolina on Tuesday, then Campbell for a three-game series starting Thursday. The Aggies travel to Monmouth for a three-game set beginning Thursday.
