Jacksonville at North Florida
JACKSONVILLE (Interstat) — Brendan Holland threw six and two-thirds innings of no-hit baseball and the Jacksonville Dolphins held off a late North Florida Ospreys rally for a 4-3 victory Saturday at John Sessions Stadium in an ASUN Conference game.
Holland, who struck out four and allowed two earned runs, did not surrender a hit. He walked two batters and was lifted after the seventh inning. Austin Williamson pitched one and one-third hitless innings with one strikeout, and Dominic Pieto worked the ninth, allowing one run on two hits while striking out three, to seal the win.
Jacksonville, which improved to 26-19, scored all four of its runs in the first three innings. The Dolphins took a 4-0 lead in the top of the first when Sam Mummau was hit by a pitch and Roger Vergara followed with a two-run home run to right-center. Vergara finished 2 for 4 with a home run and two RBIs.
The Dolphins added two more in the third. Vergara singled, advanced to second on a throwing error by North Florida pitcher Ryan Furey on a failed pickoff attempt, and moved to third. Abdriel Delgado doubled down the left-field line to bring home Vergara, making it 5-0. After a groundout, Logan Baratta doubled to right-center, scoring Delgado to push the lead to 6-0. However, the scoring stopped there.
North Florida, which fell to 25-20, chipped away in the bottom of the fourth. With one out, Marcus Farner singled and Gage Gomez walked. Boone Hosey doubled to left-center, scoring both runners to cut the deficit to 6-2.
The Ospreys threatened again in the ninth. With one out, Jacob Toberman doubled to left. Pinch hitter Jackson Schrafft doubled to right-center, scoring Toberman to make it 6-3. But Pieto struck out the next two batters to end the game.
Furey took the loss, allowing eight hits and four earned runs over six innings with seven strikeouts. Clay Hendry tossed three scoreless innings of relief, allowing two hits and striking out three.
Jacksonville’s offense collected 10 hits, including two each from Vergara, Baratta, Blaise Edmonds and Sam Mummau. Baratta drove in a run. Delgado also had a hit and an RBI. The Dolphins stranded eight runners.
North Florida finished with eight hits. Hosey went 2 for 4 with two RBIs. Schrafft had a pinch-hit double and an RBI. Toberman doubled and scored.
The win avenged a 5-4 loss to North Florida on Friday, the first game of the three-game series. The Dolphins had lost four consecutive games to the Ospreys dating to last season, including three straight earlier this year. The two teams are scheduled to meet again Sunday for the series finale.
Jacksonville’s Holland, who earlier this season threw six and two-thirds innings of two-run ball against Queens, was in control from the outset Saturday. He did not allow a hit, but two walks and a pair of errors led to the two earned runs charged against him.
North Florida’s bullpen held Jacksonville scoreless over the final six innings, but the early deficit proved too much. The Ospreys had a chance in the ninth after Schrafft’s RBI double brought the tying run to the plate, but Pieto struck out pinch hitter Tyler Velardo swinging to end the contest.
Jacksonville will travel to Florida State on Tuesday before a three-game set at Stetson. North Florida heads to Florida on Tuesday, then visits Queens.
Interstat’s game simulator projected an 8-5 final score in favor of Jacksonville, and the Interstat ELO system gave the Dolphins a 52.60 percent probability to win.
