Jacksonville at North Florida
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (Interstat) – Jacksonville visits North Florida on Saturday at John Sessions Stadium in an ASUN series matchup, with first pitch scheduled for 81 degrees and cloudy skies.
The Dolphins (25-18 overall) hold a one-game edge over the Ospreys (24-19) in the conference standings following Friday’s series opener. The result of that game was not immediately available.
Saturday’s pitching matchup features two right-handers coming off vastly different outings.
Jacksonville’s Kyle Powers has been dominant in his recent appearances. Over his last four relief outings spanning 12 2/3 innings, Powers has allowed one earned run on nine hits with eight strikeouts. He worked four scoreless innings in a win against Queens (N.C.) on April 26, allowing four hits and striking out three.
North Florida’s Trevor Nikolis has been less consistent. The Ospreys pitcher threw five scoreless innings against Florida Gulf Coast on April 26, allowing no hits with three strikeouts, but took the loss. In his prior three appearances, Nikolis allowed nine earned runs over nine innings.
The series has been one-sided in North Florida’s favor this season. The Ospreys took three of four meetings in March, winning 12-6 on March 29, 11-4 on March 28 and 4-2 on March 27 in Jacksonville.
Jacksonville enters with momentum, having won four straight. The Dolphins swept a three-game ASUN series against Queens (N.C.) from April 24-26, outscoring the Royals 22-5. They also won at Florida 7-5 on April 21 and beat UCF 5-4 in 11 innings on April 14.
North Florida has lost four consecutive games, all on the road. After dropping two of three at Florida Gulf Coast from April 24-26 — including a 13-3 loss in the finale — the Ospreys lost at home to Florida State 4-1 on April 21 and dropped two of three to Stetson from April 17-19.
An Interstat game simulator projects an 8-5 Jacksonville victory.
Following Saturday’s game, both teams conclude the series Sunday. Jacksonville then travels to Florida State on Tuesday, while North Florida visits Florida. The Dolphins next ASUN series is at Stetson from May 8-10, and the Ospreys visit Queens (N.C.) for a three-game set the same weekend.
