Alcorn State at Southeastern Louisiana
HAMMOND, La. (Interstat) — Southeastern Louisiana capitalized on a cascade of Alcorn State mistakes, using a combination of wild pitches, errors and timely hitting to turn a close game into a rout, defeating the Braves 11-1 on Wednesday night at Pat Kenelly Diamond at Alumni Field.
The Lions (24-17) scored at least one run in four of the first six innings, with a five-run sixth inning breaking the game open. The Braves (3-33), who have now lost 10 straight, managed only three hits and grounded into two double plays, struggling to generate offense against a trio of Southeastern Louisiana pitchers.
The most important part of the game unfolded in the bottom of the first inning, immediately after Alcorn State had taken a rare 1-0 lead without a hit in the top half. The Braves’ advantage, which came when Jermel Davis reached on a third-base error by Alex Perry and later scored, was short-lived. Southeastern Louisiana responded by battering Alcorn State starter Garrett Oswald and reliever Myles Dews with patience and opportunism.
The Lions’ first-inning rally was a precursor to the entire contest. After Perry walked and Connor Robichaux singled, a wild pitch by Oswald allowed Perry to score the tying run. Oswald then hit a batter and walked another, leading to his removal after recording just two outs. Dews entered but immediately unleashed two more wild pitches, the second of which allowed Robichaux to score the go-ahead run. The Lions took a 2-1 lead without the benefit of a hit after the Robichaux single, setting a tone of free bases and unearned opportunities that would define the night.
Southeastern Louisiana starter Austin Minichino earned the win, allowing one earned run on one hit over 3 2/3 innings. Relievers Nick Gisclair and Dalton Gray combined for 3 1/3 scoreless innings of relief, surrendering just two hits and striking out four.
Alcorn State’s lone run after the first came in the fourth without a hit. Kobe Hawk was hit by a pitch, stole second, advanced to third on a groundout and scored on a balk by Minichino.
The Lions steadily pulled away. Perry launched his 12th home run of the season, a solo shot to left-center in the second inning, to make it 3-1. They added two more in the fourth on three walks, two wild pitches and an RBI double by Justin Williams.
The game was sealed in the decisive sixth inning. With the score 6-1, the Lions sent 11 men to the plate, scoring five runs—only one of which was earned—on three hits, two walks and two critical Alcorn State errors. Williams delivered a two-run single, and pinch-hitter Parker Panks added an RBI single later in the frame, capitalizing on a throwing error by first baseman Tristin Holloway and a fielding error by pitcher Nicholas Johnson.
Williams finished 2 for 4 with three RBIs for the Lions. Perry was 2 for 3 with the home run, a double, two runs scored and an RBI. Alcorn State used six pitchers, who combined to issue 10 walks and throw six wild pitches.
The result heavily outperformed the pregame projection by Interstat, whose game simulator had predicted a 5-1 Lions victory. Their ELO system gave Southeastern Louisiana a 96.50 percent probability to win.
