Elon at Campbell
LILLINGTON, N.C. (Interstat) — Jared Hall’s three-run homer in the seventh inning broke open a tight contest and Brian DuRoff added a three-run double in the ninth as the Elon Phoenix salvaged the final game of its Colonial Athletic Association series with a 10-5 victory over the Campbell Fightin’ Camels on Sunday afternoon at Jim Perry Stadium.
The Phoenix (16-23, 2-7 CAA) overcame an early deficit and a strong starting pitching performance from Campbell’s Zach Sabers to secure a road win against the odds. Interstat’s game simulator had projected a Campbell victory with a 74.4% probability.
Campbell (25-14, 7-2) struck first in the opening inning. After a walk to Lawson Rumley, first baseman Jonah Oster launched a two-run homer to deep left field off Elon starter Owen Winebarger for a quick 2-0 lead.
Elon responded by chipping away with single runs in the second and third innings, both aided by Campbell errors. Charlie Fattore drove in a run with a single in the second, and Cole Evans plated another with a single in the third, tying the game.
The Fightin’ Camels reclaimed the lead in the third on an RBI double from Lukas Schramm and extended it to 4-2 in the fifth on a solo home run by Carlos Lugo. Sabers, the Campbell starter, kept the Phoenix in check through 4 1/3 innings, allowing two unearned runs on seven hits while striking out six.
The most important sequence of the game came in the top of the seventh with Elon trailing 4-2. After loading the bases with one out, the Phoenix saw two runners move into scoring position on a passed ball. Following another strikeout, Hall stepped in and delivered the decisive blow, a three-run homer to deep right field off reliever Jackson Music that turned the two-run deficit into a 5-4 Elon lead.
Elon put the game out of reach in the ninth against the Campbell bullpen. After loading the bases, DuRoff cleared them with a double to left-center field, stretching the lead to 8-4. He later scored on a wild pitch. Campbell managed a final run in the bottom of the ninth on an RBI single from Lugo, but could mount no further threat.
The win was anchored by Winebarger, who battled through 7 2/3 innings for the Phoenix. Despite allowing four runs on nine hits, he worked out of trouble consistently, stranding multiple runners and striking out six to earn the victory. Michael Staiano recorded the final four outs to seal the win.
Oster and Lugo each drove in two runs for Campbell, with Schramm collecting three hits. The loss went to Campbell reliever Braxton Shaffer, who was charged with one run in 1 1/3 innings of work.
The victory gives Elon a split of the final two games of the series after dropping the opener on Saturday. Campbell saw its four-game winning streak snapped.
