Evansville at Indiana

EVANSVILLE, Ind. (Interstat) — The Evansville Purple Aces and Indiana Hoosiers will meet for the second time this season Wednesday at Bart Kaufman Field, with first pitch scheduled for 6 p.m. EDT under cloudy skies and 81-degree temperatures.

The midweek nonconference matchup features two teams looking to build momentum. Evansville (13-20) arrives after dropping two of three at home to Southern Illinois, including a 16-3 loss Sunday. Indiana (14-21) is coming off a Big Ten series loss at Maryland, falling 8-6 on Sunday.

The Purple Aces won the earlier meeting this season, a 5-4 victory in 11 innings at Evansville on March 31.

A key player to watch for Evansville is right-hander Kenton Deverman. The pitcher has been inconsistent lately, following a five-inning, no-hit shutout performance at Bradley on April 4 with a tough outing against Southern Illinois on April 12, allowing four earned runs over 4 1/3 innings.

For Indiana, outfielder Ayden Crouse is coming off a strong game. He went 3 for 4 with a home run and two RBIs in Sunday’s loss at Maryland. In the March 31 loss to Evansville, Crouse was 1 for 3.

Both bullpens could be tested. In Sunday’s loss, Evansville used Conner VanderLuitgaren, who allowed a run in an inning of work. Indiana relievers Jackson Yarberry and Brayton Thomas combined for 8 1/3 innings of relief at Maryland, each allowing three earned runs.

According to Interstat’s game simulator, Evansville is projected to win 6-4.

Following this game, Evansville will travel to Belmont for a three-game series starting Friday. Indiana will host Abilene Christian for a three-game set beginning Friday.
