Alcorn State at Arkansas-Pine Bluff
PINE BLUFF, Ark. (Interstat) — The Arkansas-Pine Bluff Golden Lions erupted for 10 runs over the fifth and sixth innings Sunday afternoon to turn a close Southwestern Athletic Conference contest into a 14-2 rout of the Alcorn State Braves at Torii Hunter Baseball/Softball Complex.
The victory secured a three-game series sweep for the Golden Lions (12-17, 3-0 SWAC), who outscored the Braves 40-11 over the weekend. Alcorn State fell to 2-23 overall and 0-3 in conference play.
The game’s most important sequence came in the bottom of the fifth inning, transforming an 8-2 lead into a commanding blowout. After Konner Giddley led off with a double, Zach Wieder delivered a two-run single to center the onslaught. The very next batter, Blake Coleman, launched a two-run homer to left field, capping a four-run frame that broke the game open.
Coleman finished 2 for 4 with a home run and three RBIs. Wieder was a perfect 3 for 3 at the plate, driving in four runs. Giddley went 2 for 3 with an RBI and scored three times.
The offensive support was more than enough for Arkansas-Pine Bluff starter Ryland Morin, who rebounded strongly from a rough outing the previous weekend. The right-hander earned the win, allowing one earned run on four hits over six innings while striking out seven. He effectively silenced the Braves after a shaky first inning.
Alcorn State struck first, capitalizing on early mistakes. Kanious Davis reached on an error to lead off the game, stole two bases and scored along with Rayfield Adams III on a two-run single by Keatan Hawk. The Braves managed just two more hits the rest of the way against Morin and reliever Joe King, who struck out two in a perfect seventh inning.
The Golden Lions immediately answered in their half of the first, scoring two unearned runs on an RBI single from Coleman and a passed ball. They took the lead for good in the second on a sacrifice fly from Vinny Saumell and an RBI groundout from Jose Vasquez, who drove in two runs on the day despite not recording a hit.
Arkansas-Pine Bluff added two more in the third on an RBI single from Nick Hockemeyer and a fielder’s choice from Giddley. They extended the lead to 8-2 in the fourth on an RBI bunt single from Wieder and a run-scoring double from Aaron Grant.
After the five-run fifth, the Golden Lions added two final runs in the sixth on a sacrifice fly from Vasquez and an RBI single from Wieder.
The Golden Lions’ 14-hit attack was complemented by two sacrifice flies. Alcorn State used five pitchers, with starter Yoni Castro taking the loss after allowing four runs, two earned, in 1 2/3 innings.
The game concluded a dominant series for Arkansas-Pine Bluff, which outperformed statistical projections that favored a 5-1 victory. The Golden Lions will host Central Arkansas on Tuesday. Alcorn State travels to face Southern Mississippi later Sunday.
