South Florida at UCF
ORLANDO, Fla. (Interstat) — Zak Skinner lined a walk-off single through the right side in the bottom of the ninth inning Sunday, lifting the UCF Knights to a 2-1 victory over the South Florida Bulls in a taut, pitching-dominated series finale at Jay Bergman Field.
The game, which stretched from afternoon into evening, was a stark contrast to the previous day’s offensive outbursts and was decided by a final-frame rally against the Bulls’ bullpen.
UCF improved to 5-5 overall, while South Florida, which had taken both games of a doubleheader Saturday, fell to 9-3.
The most important part of the game unfolded in the bottom of the ninth inning with the score locked at 1-1. South Florida reliever Kaden Smith, who had inherited a runner in the seventh, walked leadoff man Williamson and hit batter III with one out. After a pitching change brought in Dominic Pontbriant, UCF pinch-hitter Austin Jacobs loaded the bases with a sharp single to right.
South Florida turned to its third pitcher of the inning, Landon ODonnell. On a 1-1 count, Skinner delivered his second hit of the game, a clean single to right that scored Williamson from third and triggered a celebration, avenging the Knights’ two losses Saturday.
The late drama overshadowed a masterful pitchers’ duel through the first six innings. South Florida starter Landen Yorek was brilliant, tossing 6 1/3 innings of no-hit baseball. He allowed one unearned run, walked two and struck out two before exiting after 73 pitches. His lone blemish came in the second inning when Javier Crespo singled, advanced on Yorek’s own throwing error, and scored on a two-out RBI single from Cayden Gaskin.
UCF’s Joey Trombley, the top star for the Knights, matched Yorek zero for zero after that second-inning run. Trombley worked six strong innings, allowing one earned run on just two hits while walking three and striking out four. The lone run against him came in the sixth when Drew Lohry walked, stole third, and scored on an RBI single by Eli Thomas.
The Knights’ bullpen was flawless. Mateo Gray earned the win with three hitless innings of relief, striking out five and walking one to silence the Bulls’ bats and keep the game tied.
South Florida’s offense, which had produced 11 runs in the Saturday twin bill, was held to just two hits total—singles by Thomas and Jackson Lutz. The Bulls squandered a major opportunity in the seventh after Gray entered, leaving runners at second and third. They also threatened in the ninth when Rafael Relaford walked and stole both second and third with two outs, but Gray struck out Jackson Green looking to end the inning.
UCF finished with five hits, two from Skinner, whose final one was the most consequential. The victory allowed UCF to avoid a series sweep after dropping the first two games of the weekend set by scores of 2-1 and 9-2.
South Florida next hosts Stetson on Tuesday. UCF welcomes Florida Gulf Coast to Orlando on Wednesday.
