Arkansas State at Arkansas

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. (Interstat) — In a stunning reversal of expectations, the Arkansas State Red Wolves delivered a commanding 12-4 victory over the Arkansas Razorbacks on Tuesday afternoon at Baum Stadium, powered by a relentless offensive barrage and a shutdown bullpen performance.

The game, a midweek nonconference clash between in-state foes, was projected to be a tight contest heavily favoring the home team. Interstat’s game simulator had forecast a 7-6 Arkansas win, with its ELO system giving the Razorbacks a 90.5% probability of victory. Instead, the Red Wolves authored a statement win, improving to 6-2 on the season and handing the Razorbacks (6-2) a decisive loss on their home field.

The most important part of the game arrived early and decisively. After Arkansas took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first on a solo home run by Maika Niu, the Red Wolves responded with a devastating second-inning rally that effectively decided the contest. Facing Arkansas starter Hunter Lee, Arkansas State sent 10 men to the plate and scored six runs on five hits. The inning was capped by a monumental grand slam from center fielder Ashton Quiller, whose blast to left-center field cleared the bases and broke the game open, giving the Red Wolves a 6-1 lead from which they never looked back.

Arkansas State continued to apply pressure, adding single runs in the third and fourth innings on solo home runs by left fielder Cross Jumper and designated hitter Lane Walton, respectively. The Razorbacks managed to chip away with a solo homer from Zack Stewart in the fourth, making it 8-3, but the Red Wolves put the game out of reach in the seventh. Aidan Houseworth delivered an RBI double, and Jumper followed with his second homer of the afternoon, a two-run shot that pushed the lead to 11-3. A final run scored on a wild pitch in the eighth.

Jumper was the offensive standout, finishing 3-for-5 with two home runs, three RBIs and three runs scored. Quiller’s grand slam represented his only hit, but it provided the game’s defining moment and four crucial RBIs. Houseworth added two hits, including a double, and drove in two runs. As a team, the Red Wolves pounded out 14 hits.

On the mound, the Red Wolves’ pitching staff silenced a potent Arkansas lineup. Starter Andrew Allen worked two innings, allowing two runs. Brett Foss provided critical middle relief, throwing three scoreless innings and allowing just one hit while striking out three to earn the win. Cooper Garrison closed the door over the final four innings, surrendering one run on three hits to secure the victory.

For Arkansas, Niu and Stewart each had two hits and two RBIs, but the Razorbacks stranded multiple runners and grounded into a key double play. Starter Hunter Lee took the loss, unable to escape the second inning. Reliever Ethan McElvain provided two scoreless innings of relief, but the early deficit proved insurmountable.

The victory marks a significant early-season triumph for Arkansas State, which now looks ahead to a quick rematch with the Razorbacks on Wednesday. Arkansas will seek to even the series as both teams continue to tune up for conference play.
