Rijeka at Zagreb
ZAGREB (Interstat) — Rijeka will seek its first win of the season Saturday when it visits Zagreb in a women’s professional basketball game. Rijeka enters 0-1, while Zagreb is 0-0 and will be playing its season opener.
Rijeka dropped its opening game to visiting Sibenik 78-60. Anja Konjevic, Rijeka’s player to watch, led the way with 13 points and 10 rebounds in 28 minutes. Mia Glomazic added four points, five rebounds and two assists in 21 minutes, and Lana Pozder chipped in eight points, six rebounds and one assist in 18 minutes.
Konjevic’s production will be central for Rijeka against a Zagreb side that has yet to take the floor this season. Rijeka will need to improve on both ends after allowing Sibenik to pull away in its opener. The visiting team will also look for more support around Konjevic, particularly from Glomazic and Pozder, who were the next most productive players in the loss.
Zagreb’s most recent result was a 72-54 home loss to Sibenik. Zagreb has had time to prepare for its first game of the new campaign and will try to start with a strong home performance. The home side will aim to control the tempo and take advantage of a Rijeka team still searching for rhythm after one game. The matchup could hinge on how well Rijeka handles Zagreb’s pressure and whether Konjevic can continue to produce on the interior. Zagreb will also seek to use its home court to set an early tone in its opener.
Rijeka’s schedule does not get easier after Saturday. Rijeka is set to host Brod na Savi next, then visit Zadar, host Medvescak, visit Split, host Pozega, visit Ragusa, host Zadar, visit Tresnjevka, visit Sibenik and host Zagreb. The stretch will test Rijeka’s depth and ability to bounce back from an early defeat.
Zagreb’s upcoming slate begins with a visit to Brod na Savi, followed by a home game against Zadar, a trip to Medvescak, a home matchup with Split, a visit to Pozega, a home game against Ragusa, a trip to Zadar, a home game against Tresnjevka, a visit to Sibenik and a visit to Rijeka. Zagreb will look to build momentum before the schedule becomes more crowded.
For Rijeka, the focus will be on starting faster and getting Konjevic involved early. The team will need to limit second-chance opportunities and avoid turnovers that can fuel Zagreb’s transition game. Zagreb, meanwhile, will try to shake off any rust from the offseason and establish its home-court advantage.
Interstat’s game simulator projects a final score of Zagreb 82, Rijeka 70.
