Sutherland vs. Syd. Comets

ALEXANDRIA, Australia (Interstat) — The Sutherland Sharks look to build momentum against the struggling Sydney Comets in a Women’s NBL1 matchup Saturday at Alexandria.

Sutherland (4-4) visits a Comets side (3-8) that has dropped three straight games. The Sharks defeated the Comets 78-60 on March 28 in their most recent head-to-head meeting.

Sutherland forward Madeleine Norris is the visitor’s primary threat. In an 88-64 victory over Central Coast on May 23, Norris posted a double-double with 21 points, 15 rebounds and five assists over 36 minutes. She has scored at least 20 points in three of her last four outings, including 29 points and eight rebounds in a loss to Bankstown on May 10.

Lauren Nicholson also starred against Central Coast, scoring a game-high 27 points on 7 assists and 3 rebounds.

The Comets counter with guard Mikayla Pirini, who has been a consistent scorer despite the team’s recent slide. Pirini posted 15 points and 6 rebounds in a 48-81 loss to Albury Wodonga on May 23. She also produced a double-double of 12 points and 12 assists in a 73-60 win at Penrith on May 3.

Sutherland enters the contest following a dominant 24-point win. The Sharks have alternated wins and losses over their last six games, falling to Albury Wodonga and Bankstown on the road before their most recent victory.

The Comets, meanwhile, have lost four of their last five. After their lone win at Penrith, they dropped consecutive home games to Hills, Manly Warringah and Albury Wodonga.

Saturday’s game opens a two-game road trip for Sutherland, which travels to Penrith on Sunday. Sydney plays at the Centre of Excellence on Sunday.

Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. local time.
