Southern Districts vs. Rockhampton

Preview: Southern Districts at Rockhampton, NBL Women

ROCKHAMPTON, Australia (Interstat) — A clash of teams heading in opposite directions opens the weekend for the NBL Women when the Southern Districts Spartans visit the Rockhampton Cyclones on Friday, April 24.

The Spartans (1-0) arrive riding high after a dominant 105-61 season-opening victory over Brisbane last Saturday. Rockhampton (0-1), meanwhile, looks to rebound from a 92-71 road loss to Mackay on the same day.

Southern Districts’ offense was firing on all cylinders, led by a historic triple-double from guard Jessica McDowell White. She posted 24 points, 10 rebounds and 12 assists in 37 minutes. Forward Kalani Purcell added a double-double with 17 points and 14 rebounds, while Hayley McDowell White contributed 22 points.

The Cyclones will counter with guard Gracie Stugart, who nearly recorded a triple-double herself in the loss to Mackay, finishing with 13 points, seven rebounds and nine assists in a team-high 39 minutes. Tai Wakelin Gray and Akaysha Muggeridge each added 15 points.

The matchup pits Southern Districts’ explosive, balanced attack against a Rockhampton squad seeking more consistent production. The Spartans’ 105-point outburst showcased their potent transition game and ball movement, which will test the Cyclones’ defense.

For Rockhampton, protecting home court is critical as it navigates a challenging early schedule. Containing Jessica McDowell White and disrupting the Spartans’ rhythm will be paramount.

Following this contest, Southern Districts faces a quick turnaround with a road game at Mackay on Saturday. Rockhampton does not play again until May 10, when it hosts Brisbane.

Tip-off is scheduled for Friday evening at the Cyclones’ home venue in Rockhampton.
