Sturt vs. Norwood

MARDEN, Australia (Interstat) — The NBL1 Central women’s basketball season continues Saturday as the league-leading Sturt Sabres visit the Norwood Flames at Marden. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. local time.

Sturt (10-2) carries the best record in the competition after a 75-62 victory over Central Districts on May 31. The Sabres have won five of their last six games, their only loss during that span coming against Norwood — a 69-59 defeat on May 2 in the teams’ most recent head-to-head meeting. Sturt’s offense ranks among the league’s most potent, averaging 77.2 points per game, while the defense has held opponents to 61.3.

Norwood (7-5) enters with momentum after a 78-70 win over Noarlunga City on May 31, snapping a two-game skid. The Flames own a 4-2 record at home this season. Their loss to Woodville on May 23 — a 101-96 shootout — highlighted an offense capable of high scoring but also revealed defensive lapses that have plagued them at times.

Players to watch

Sturt forward Tayla Brazel has been dominant in the post. In her past three games, she averaged 14.3 points and 12 rebounds, including a 19-point, 11-rebound double-double against Central Districts on May 31 and a 15-point, 14-rebound outing two days earlier. Brazel’s ability to control the glass and finish inside makes her a focal point for the Sabres.

Norwood guard Maddy Hinton has emerged as the Flames’ go-to scorer. She poured in 21 points against Noarlunga City on May 31 and dropped 23 despite a loss to Woodville on May 23. Hinton has scored at least 11 points in four of her last five appearances, and her perimeter shooting could stretch Sturt’s defense.

Recent form

Sturt’s 75-62 win over Central Districts was led by Brazel, point guard Paige Padroth (13 points, 9 rebounds, 3 assists) and Zoe Walker Roberts (7 points, 8 rebounds, 6 assists). The Sabres have not lost to a team other than Norwood since May 9, when West Adelaide routed them 93-66.

Norwood’s victory over Noarlunga City featured contributions from forward Cali Clark (16 points, 17 rebounds) and forward Amy Cotton (17 points, 4 rebounds). The Flames will need similar production from their supporting cast to keep pace with the league leaders.

Series history

Norwood won the first meeting this season 69-59 on May 2, holding Sturt to 33.3 percent shooting. The Sabres will look to avenge that defeat and extend their hold on first place. With both teams sitting near the top of the standings, Saturday’s matchup carries significant playoff implications.
