Melbourne vs. Waverley
Preview: Melbourne, Waverley Seek First Wins in NBL Women’s Clash
MOUNT WAVERLEY, Australia (Interstat) — Two teams searching for their first victory of the season will meet Thursday when the Melbourne women’s basketball team visits the Waverley Wildcats in an Australia NBL matchup.
The game at Mount Waverley Stadium pits a winless Melbourne squad (0-1) against a Waverley team (0-3) mired in a deeper early-season slump. Both sides are coming off double-digit losses from Sunday.
Melbourne fell 95-77 to Mount Gambier despite a standout performance from forward Hannah Giddey. The team’s player to watch scored 26 points, grabbed seven rebounds, dished four assists and blocked three shots in 38 minutes. Guard Isabella Brancatisano added 21 points and eight assists in the defeat.
Waverley dropped a 71-60 decision to Sandringham. Their key player, point guard Millicent McCarthy, led the way with 17 points and eight assists. Guard Tayla Dalton contributed nine points and eight rebounds. The Wildcats’ struggles extend further back, with additional losses to Knox and Logan to open their campaign.
The matchup presents a critical opportunity for either team to gain early momentum. Melbourne’s offense, powered by Giddey and Brancatisano, will test a Waverley defense that has allowed an average of 72.7 points per game in its three losses. Conversely, Waverley will rely on the playmaking of McCarthy to ignite an attack that has been held to 60 points or fewer in two of its three outings.
Following this contest, Melbourne begins a stretch of 10 games starting April 12 against Ballarat. Waverley’s next 10-game slate opens April 11 at Nunawading.
Tipoff is set for Thursday night at Mount Waverley Stadium.
