MELBOURNE, Australia (Interstat) — Mount Gambier defeated Melbourne 95-77 in an Australia NBL One women’s professional basketball game Sunday, overcoming heavy odds as a statistical underdog.

The visiting Mount Gambier improved to 2-0, while Melbourne fell to 0-1 in a result contrary to pregame projections. Interstat’s ELO system had given Melbourne an 88.6 percent probability to win.

Melbourne’s Maria Barneda scored a game-high 26 points and added seven rebounds, four assists and three blocks in the loss. The performance was not enough to counter Mount Gambier’s balanced attack, which secured an 18-point road victory.
