Maitland vs. Northern Suburbs

CROWSNEST, Australia (Interstat) — The Maitland women’s basketball team faces a daunting challenge Saturday when it visits undefeated Northern Suburbs in an Australia NBL matchup at Crows Nest.

Tipoff is 7 p.m. local time.

Maitland (4-7 across all competitions) enters on a two-game split, most recently falling 71-61 at home to Manly Warringah on Sunday. Sara Matthews, the team’s leading scorer in that loss, posted 19 points and nine rebounds in 32 minutes. Forward Shakera Reilly added 15 points, nine rebounds and four assists, while Kasey Neubert had seven points and nine rebounds.

Northern Suburbs, meanwhile, has won all 12 of its games this season, including a 92-66 victory over the Centre of Excellence on Saturday. Guard Jazmin Shelley starred with 32 points, five rebounds, 10 assists and one block in 36 minutes. Talya Brugler recorded a double-double with 14 points and 13 rebounds, and point guard Caitlin Martin chipped in 16 points and four assists.

The matchup pits two of the league’s most productive players against each other. Maitland’s Matthews, a swing player, has been inconsistent: After scoring 19 points against Manly Warringah, she managed just three points on 1-of-6 shooting in a win over Hills on May 23. Over her last five games, she is averaging 8.8 points and 5.8 rebounds in about 24.6 minutes per game.

Northern Suburbs’ Shelley, a guard, has been dominant. In her past five outings — all victories — she has averaged 28.6 points, 6.6 rebounds, 5.6 assists and two blocks per game, shooting 48% from the field. She scored 32 points against both the Centre of Excellence and Central Coast, and added 28 points, 10 rebounds and five assists against Newcastle on May 9.

Maitland’s season has been a rollercoaster. After opening with four losses in five games, the team split its next six, including a 65-63 road win at Albury Wodonga on May 9 and an 82-76 home victory over Hills on May 23. However, the defense has allowed 71.7 points per game over its last three contests.

Northern Suburbs has been relentless, winning by an average margin of 31.4 points. The team has not allowed an opponent to score more than 82 points all season, while scoring at least 75 in every game. Their closest contest was a 91-82 win over Albury Wodonga on April 12.

After Saturday, Maitland returns home to face Sydney Comets on June 13, while Northern Suburbs hosts Sydney Comets on June 20.
