Butte vs Laney

OAKLAND, Calif. (Interstat) — A spot in the state final four is on the line Saturday when the top-seeded Laney Eagles host the Butte Roadrunners in the 3C2A Northern California Regional Finals women’s junior college basketball championship.

Game time is set for Saturday, March 7, 2026, at Laney College.

The Eagles (22-3), riding a dominant 10-game winning streak, enter as the region’s powerhouse. Their average margin of victory during that stretch is a staggering 48.6 points. They are led by sophomore forward Sophia Askew-Goncalves, who is coming off a 23-point, 10-rebound performance in a 91-43 rout of Sacramento City on Feb. 28. Gianna Ghio (23 points) and point guard Ashanti Dias (25 points, 10 assists) provide a multifaceted offensive attack.

Standing in their way are the Roadrunners (18-5), who have won five of their last six. Butte is fueled by the stellar play of guard Marissa Elizalde, who scored 27 points and dished six assists in their 60-48 win over San Jose on Feb. 28. Support comes from forwards Mia Reyes (14 points, eight rebounds in that game) and Brook Marr (15 points, four rebounds).

This matchup is a rematch of a thrilling overtime contest from Dec. 6, 2025, which Laney won 72-69 on Butte’s home floor. The Roadrunners will be seeking redemption and an upset to snap Laney’s perfect home record this season.

The winner advances to the 3C2A State Championship tournament. Laney aims to leverage its high-octane offense and home-court advantage, while Butte will rely on its backcourt leadership and defensive resilience to pull off the road victory.
