SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. (Interstat) — Two teams seeking to escape the bottom of the standings will meet Friday when the San Bernardino Valley College women’s basketball team hosts Palo Verde College in a California Community College Athletic Association matchup.
The game pits the Wolverines (5-21), who sit one game ahead of the Pirates (3-23) in the conference, in a rematch of a Jan. 21 contest won by San Bernardino Valley, 67-62.
Both programs have struggled this season but are coming off performances featuring standout individual efforts. Palo Verde, mired in a four-game losing streak, fell 67-52 at Desert on the same date. Despite the loss, forward Jennifer Hughes delivered a dominant performance on the glass, pulling down 26 rebounds to go with 10 points and four assists. Hughes has recorded a double-double in four of her last five outings, including a 16-point, 15-rebound game in the Pirates’ last victory, a 57-48 win over Barstow on Jan. 28.
The Wolverines’ offense will lean on Melendez and Majesty Cade, who had 18 points and six assists in the win over Barstow. The Pirates will counter with Hughes and Anaiah Brown, who scored 20 points with 13 rebounds in the loss to Desert.
