PHOENIX (Interstat) — In a defensive struggle defined by critical plays in the final minute, the UCLA Bruins edged the Texas Longhorns 51-44 in a women’s NCAA Division I playoff game Friday night at Mortgage Matchup Center.

A crowd of 15,856 watched as the top-seeded Bruins, now 35-1, advanced by surviving a ferocious challenge from a Texas team that finished its season at 35-4. The game, a rematch of a Longhorns victory in November, was a stark contrast to the high-scoring offenses both teams had displayed throughout the season, instead becoming a grinding battle of attrition.

The most important part of the game unfolded in the tense final 18 seconds with UCLA clinging to a 47-44 lead. Texas, after a defensive stop, had a chance to tie. Longhorns guard Madison Booker drove the lane in transition but had her layup attempt emphatically blocked by UCLA’s 6-foot-7 center Lauren Betts. The Bruins secured the defensive rebound and called a full timeout with 18 seconds remaining.

On the ensuing inbounds play, Texas was forced to foul. UCLA’s Kiki Rice was sent to the line for two shots with 13 seconds left. She calmly sank both free throws, extending the lead to 49-44 and forcing Texas to seek a three-pointer. The Longhorns’ hurried attempt missed, and after another foul, Rice returned to the line with three seconds left, sinking two more free throws to seal the seven-point victory. The final sequence, capped by Betts’ crucial block and Rice’s clutch free-throw shooting, was the decisive chapter in a game where every point was precious.

UCLA established an early lead, ending the first quarter up 14-6 behind balanced scoring and active defense. Texas, however, responded with a strong second quarter, outscoring the Bruins 11-6 to cut the deficit to just 20-17 at halftime. The third quarter was a stalemate, with each team scoring 11 points, setting the stage for a dramatic fourth quarter with UCLA leading 31-28.

The Bruins opened the final period with a 7-0 run, keyed by a Rice three-pointer and a Gabriela Jaquez layup, to take a 38-28 lead with 8:33 to play. Texas answered with a 7-0 run of its own, capped by a Jordan Lee three-pointer, to pull within 40-37 with 4:13 remaining. The teams traded baskets until the score reached 47-44 with under a minute to play, setting up the final, fateful possession for Texas that was thwarted by Betts.

Betts, from Centennial, Colorado, was the game’s standout performer, finishing with 16 points, three assists and three blocks in 34 minutes. Her presence in the paint altered countless Texas attempts. Rice, from Bethesda, Maryland, added 11 points, including four critical free throws in the final seconds. Jaquez of Camarillo, California, and Gianna Kneepkens of Duluth, Minnesota, each contributed 10 points for UCLA.

For Texas, center Kyla Oldacre of Mason, Ohio, led the way with 11 points. Point guard Rori Harmon of Houston tallied eight points and five assists in 38 minutes of action. Justice Carlton of Katy, Texas, provided a spark off the bench with seven points.

The game was a defensive clinic, with both teams struggling from the floor. The combined score of 95 points fell far below the pregame over/under line of 132. UCLA’s victory avenged its only loss of the season, which came at Texas in late November. The Bruins’ season continues, while the Longhorns’ campaign, which included dominant wins in their previous four playoff games by an average of 36 points, concludes in the desert.
