Radford Uses Dominant Second Quarter to Defeat Morehead State

FAIRLAWN, Va. (Interstat) — A dominant second-quarter surge propelled the Radford Highlanders to a decisive 77-58 victory over the Morehead State Eagles in a non-conference women’s basketball matchup Friday night at the D.N. Dedmon Center.

The game, played before a crowd of 1,134, was effectively decided in a pivotal eight-minute stretch before halftime. After a tightly contested first quarter that ended with Radford holding a slim 18-19 lead, the Highlanders unleashed a 25-11 second-quarter run to seize control. The period was defined by Radford’s defensive pressure and opportunistic offense, forcing a series of Morehead State turnovers that fueled their transition game.

The most important part of the contest was this decisive second-quarter swing. Radford’s defense, spearheaded by active hands in the passing lanes, generated multiple steals and disrupted Morehead State’s offensive flow. The Eagles committed several costly turnovers during this span, which the Highlanders efficiently converted into points on the other end. This stretch transformed a one-point game into a 43-30 Radford advantage at the intermission, a deficit from which Morehead State never recovered.

Radford’s offensive attack was balanced and efficient. Cate Carlson, a guard from Virginia Beach, led all scorers with 20 points, adding three assists. She was instrumental in the second-quarter run, hitting key shots to extend the lead. She was supported by a strong supporting cast: guard Joi Williams of Leesburg contributed 15 points and five assists, forward Georgia Simonsen of Fairfax had 12 points and a key block, and Ellie Taylor of Bardstown, Kentucky, also chipped in 12 points. Angelina Nice of Round Hill provided a significant spark off the bench with 10 points and four assists.

Morehead State, which fell to 18-15 overall, was led by the efforts of guard Laura Toffali. The junior from Villasanta, Italy, fought hard for a team-high 18 points to go along with four assists in 34 minutes of action. Guard Marie Sepp of Tallinn, Estonia, added 10 points and four assists, but the Eagles struggled to find consistent scoring beyond their top performers. The team’s offense faltered under Radford’s defensive intensity, particularly in the fateful second period.

Radford, which improved to 23-12, maintained its comfortable lead throughout the second half. The Highlanders extended their advantage to 63-43 by the end of the third quarter, capitalizing on continued defensive stops and efficient half-court execution. Morehead State never mounted a serious threat in the final period, as both teams traded baskets with the outcome long since determined.

The victory capped a strong regular season for the Highlanders, who entered the game as significant favorites according to analytical projections. For the Eagles, the loss concluded their regular season schedule ahead of postseason tournament play. The game highlighted Radford’s depth and ability to impose its will defensively, turning a close contest into a lopsided affair with one critical burst of energy and execution before the half.
