BYU vs. Texas Christian

Preview: BYU Faces Texas Christian in Big 12 Women’s Basketball Showdown

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (Interstat) — A surging BYU squad will attempt to derail a dominant Texas Christian team when the women’s basketball powers meet in a Big 12 Conference matchup Friday at T-Mobile Center.

The eighth-ranked Cougars (23-10) enter on a four-game winning streak, including a 70-52 road victory at Utah on Thursday. They face a monumental challenge against the second-ranked Lady Frogs (27-4), who have won 10 of their last 11 and are projected as overwhelming favorites.

Interstat’s ELO system gives Texas Christian an 89% probability to win. The Lady Frogs also hold a decisive head-to-head advantage, having routed BYU 72-48 in Fort Worth on Dec. 31.

The game features a compelling duel at guard between two of the nation’s top playmakers. BYU is led by Delaney Gibb, who is averaging 21.4 points and 5.1 assists over her last nine games. She posted 19 points, five rebounds and eight assists in Thursday’s win at Utah.

Texas Christian counters with Marta Suárez, a consistent force who has scored at least 19 points in six of her last seven outings. She had 21 points and four assists in a 65-53 win over Baylor on March 1.

BYU’s recent success has been fueled by improved offensive efficiency, scoring 75 or more points in three of their last four wins. However, their four losses in the last month have all come by double digits, exposing vulnerabilities against elite defensive pressure.

Texas Christian has built its record on a balanced attack and stifling defense, holding opponents under 55 points in three of its last five victories. Their only recent stumble was a one-point road loss at Colorado on Feb. 8.

The neutral-site contest in Kansas City serves as a potential preview of the upcoming Big 12 tournament. A BYU upset would significantly bolster its postseason seeding, while Texas Christian looks to solidify its case for a seed in the NCAA tournament.

Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. Central time Friday.
