Lady Frogs Dominate Cougars in Big 12 Tournament Semifinal
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (Interstat) — A dominant opening quarter proved more than enough for seed Texas Christian as it rolled past ninth-seeded BYU 63-46 in a Big 12 Conference women’s basketball tournament quarterfinal on Friday afternoon at T-Mobile Center.
The Lady Frogs, the tournament’s top seed, erupted for 24 points in the first quarter while holding the Cougars to just eight, establishing a 16-point lead that BYU never seriously threatened. The victory improved Texas Christian’s season record to 28-4 and advanced the team to the tournament semifinals. BYU’s season concluded with a 23-11 mark.
Texas Christian’s early barrage was a collective effort, but it was senior guard Marta Suárez who provided the consistent offensive punch throughout the contest. The Spaniard finished with a game-high 17 points, including a critical 3-pointer early in the third quarter that stifled a brief BYU push. She was complemented by backcourt mate Taylor Bigby, who added 13 points, all of which came in the first half to help build the substantial lead.
The Lady Frogs’ defense and interior presence were equally pivotal. Center Clara Silva, standing 6-foot-7, anchored the paint with four blocked shots and eight points, altering countless other attempts. Her frontcourt partner, Kennedy Basham, also 6-foot-7, contributed four blocks and five points, as the duo made life exceedingly difficult for BYU’s drivers. The Cougars struggled to find any rhythm against the length and athleticism of the Texas Christian defense, which forced 15 turnovers and limited clean looks.
BYU’s offense ran primarily through guard Delaney Gibb, who matched Suárez with 17 points and dished out five assists. However, she was often forced into difficult, contested shots, going 0 for 7 from 3-point range in the first half as the Lady Frogs’ defensive pressure took its toll. Forward Bolanle Yussuf provided a spark off the bench with eight points, but no other Cougar scored more than five.
The most critical sequence of the game arrived early in the third quarter. After trailing 32-19 at halftime, BYU showed signs of life with a 7-2 run to open the second half, cutting the deficit to 34-26 on a Gibb pull-up jumper. The Cougars had momentum and a chance to draw within single digits for the first time since the opening minutes. On the ensuing possession, however, Suárez drained a deep 3-pointer off an assist from Donovyn Hunter, pushing the lead back to 11 and effectively halting BYU’s surge. The Cougars would get no closer than nine points the rest of the way.
Texas Christian point guard Olivia Miles orchestrated the offense with precision, tallying 10 points, six assists and a block while committing only two turnovers in 35 minutes of action. Her steady hand ensured the Lady Frogs maintained control even when their shooting cooled after the explosive first quarter.
The game was a stark contrast to the teams’ regular-season meeting on Dec. 31, which Texas Christian also won decisively, 72-48. The Lady Frogs have now defeated BYU in three consecutive matchups.
An announced crowd of 3,812 at the downtown Kansas City arena watched as Texas Christian methodically closed out the victory in the fourth quarter, extending the lead to as many as 19 points. The Lady Frogs shot efficiently from the field and capitalized on their free-throw opportunities, while BYU’s shooting struggles persisted across all phases.
With the win, Texas Christian moves on to face the winner of Friday’s late quarterfinal between fourth-seeded Utah and fifth-seeded Colorado. The semifinal is set for Saturday evening as the Lady Frogs continue their pursuit of a Big 12 tournament championship.
