Fort Wayne Routs Robert Morris in Horizon League Women’s Basketball
FORT WAYNE, Ind. (Interstat) — The Fort Wayne Mastodons used a dominant third-quarter surge to pull away from the Robert Morris Colonials and secure a 73-43 victory in a Horizon League women’s basketball matchup Wednesday night at Gates Sports Center.
In a game that was competitive for a half, Fort Wayne’s defensive pressure and offensive execution after halftime proved decisive. The Mastodons outscored the Colonials 22-6 in the pivotal third period, turning a 10-point halftime lead into an insurmountable advantage and avenging a home loss to Robert Morris earlier in the season.
The first half featured a back-and-forth struggle. Robert Morris, led early by Bailey Kuhns, who won the opening tip and scored the game’s first basket, managed to keep pace. The Colonials trailed by just three, 13-10, after a low-scoring first quarter and found offensive rhythm in the second. Aislin Malcolm and Myriam Traore connected from beyond the arc, and Eva Levingston was active on the glass, helping Robert Morris post 19 points in the quarter. However, Fort Wayne answered every Colonial push. Lauren Lee and Alana Nelson provided steady scoring, while Lili Krasovec facilitated and cleaned the boards. The Mastodons took a 33-29 lead into the locker room, but the outcome was still very much in doubt.
Any uncertainty was erased in a decisive third-quarter performance by the home team. Fort Wayne’s defense clamped down, forcing a series of Robert Morris turnovers and converting them into easy baskets. The Colonials managed only six points in the quarter on 2-of-12 shooting and committed six turnovers. Meanwhile, the Mastodons’ offense found its stride. Jordan Reid caught fire, scoring seven points in the period, including a three-pointer. Rylee Bess and Lauren Lee also hit from deep as part of a 9-0 run that stretched the lead to 47-33. The defensive intensity never relented, with Fort Wayne scoring 10 points off five Robert Morris turnovers in the quarter alone, effectively putting the game out of reach.
The final quarter saw Fort Wayne maintain its comfortable margin, with the lead ballooning to as many as 30 points. The Mastodons’ depth was on full display as reserves like Avery Wagner, who hit a late three-pointer, and Destiny Macharia contributed to the final tally.
Fort Wayne’s balanced attack was led by Jordan Reid, who finished with a game-high 15 points. Lauren Lee added 14 points and three assists, playing a key role in managing the offense. Alana Nelson provided 12 points, including a crucial early three-pointer, and was a defensive presence with a block. The Mastodons’ interior duo of Nelson and the 6-foot-3 Lili Krasovec, who had seven points, multiple assists, and several key rebounds and steals, controlled the paint, where Fort Wayne held a 28-20 scoring advantage.
Robert Morris was led by Myriam Traore’s 12 points and two blocks. Bailey Kuhns added nine points, but the Colonials’ offense never recovered from the third-quarter drought. The team struggled with Fort Wayne’s defensive pressure all night, committing 22 turnovers which the Mastodons converted into 25 points.
With the win, Fort Wayne improved to 19-12 overall and strengthened its position in the Horizon League standings heading into the conference tournament. Robert Morris fell to 18-12. The Mastodons have now won two of the three meetings between the teams this season, with the Colonials’ lone victory coming at home on Jan. 8.
An announced crowd of 640 at the Gates Sports Center watched as Fort Wayne executed a near-flawless second-half game plan, transforming a close contest into a decisive victory that underscored their defensive capabilities and offensive balance.
