Maryland’s Strong Start Powers Road Win Over Nebraska
LINCOLN, Neb. (Interstat) — The Maryland women’s basketball team used a dominant first half and a standout performance from Isimenme Ozzy-Momodu to secure a 78-60 road victory over Nebraska in a Big Ten Conference game Saturday at Pinnacle Bank Arena.
The Terrapins, improving to 19-6 overall, seized control with a 30-point second quarter, building a 45-28 halftime lead that the Cornhuskers could not overcome. Nebraska, which fell to 16-7, struggled with turnovers and could not sustain any offensive rhythm against Maryland’s pressure defense.
Maryland’s offense was efficient from the start, shooting 50% from the field for the game. The Terrapins dominated inside, outscoring Nebraska 44-22 in the paint and grabbing 14 offensive rebounds that led to 15 second-chance points. Defensively, Maryland forced 22 Nebraska turnovers, converting them into 23 points.
The most important part of the game was Maryland’s second-quarter surge, which turned a tight contest into a commanding lead. Leading 15-11 after a low-scoring first period, the Terrapins exploded. They opened the quarter on a 10-2 run, highlighted by a Saylor Poffenbarger three-pointer and transition scores fueled by steals. Nebraska’s Logan Nissley hit a trio of three-pointers in the quarter to keep the Cornhuskers within striking distance, but Maryland answered every run. The Terrapins closed the half on a 9-2 spurt, capped by a Rainey Welson three-pointer in the final minute, to take a 17-point advantage into the break. Nebraska never got the deficit back to single digits in the second half.
Ozzy-Momodu, a 6-foot-3 sophomore from London, was the game’s top star, providing a major spark off the bench. In just 19 minutes, she scored 16 points on 7-of-9 shooting and grabbed nine rebounds, narrowly missing a double-double. Her activity inside was pivotal, as she also recorded a block and a steal. This performance marked a significant uptick from her recent outings, where she had averaged just 4.3 points over her last three games.
Maryland’s Oluchi Okananwa added 14 points, four rebounds and three assists, while Yarden Garzon facilitated the offense with 11 points and a game-high six assists. Rainey Welson contributed 13 points and four assists. For Nebraska, Logan Nissley led all scorers with 22 points, fueled by 6-of-12 shooting from three-point range. No other Cornhusker reached double figures, as the team shot just 39.3% from the field and managed only seven assists against Maryland’s 13.
The Terrapins’ defense was particularly stifling in the first three quarters, holding Nebraska to an offensive rating of 80.8 for the game. Maryland’s own offensive rating of 106.5 proved too much for the Cornhuskers to match.
A crowd of 6,113 watched as Maryland snapped Nebraska’s two-game home winning streak in conference play. According to Interstat’s ELO system, Nebraska had entered with a slight 50.3% probability to win, and Maryland had been a narrow 1.5-point favorite. The total score of 138 points fell well under the over/under line of 149.5.
Maryland next hosts Penn State on Thursday. Nebraska travels to face Minnesota on the same night.
