Eastern Kentucky Rallies to Defeat Queens (NC) in ASUN Women’s Basketball
CHARLOTTE, N.C. (Interstat) — The Eastern Kentucky women’s basketball team turned a disastrous start into a dominant road victory Friday night, using a massive second-quarter surge to defeat Queens University of Charlotte 74-59 in an ASUN Conference game at the Levine Center.
The visiting Lady Colonels, who entered the contest with one of the league’s best records, found themselves in an early hole. The Royals, energized by a sparse home crowd of 131, blitzed Eastern Kentucky in the opening period, shooting efficiently and capitalizing on Lady Colonel turnovers to build a 23-14 lead by the first quarter’s end. Jermany Mapp and Dayuna Colvin led the early Queens charge, combining for 13 points in the frame.
The complexion of the game changed entirely in the second quarter. Eastern Kentucky’s defense stiffened, disrupting Queens’ rhythm and forcing a series of rushed shots and turnovers. The Royals managed just five points in the period, going scoreless for stretches exceeding five minutes. Meanwhile, the Lady Colonels methodically worked their way back, with Althea Kara Angeles and Ndidiamaka Ndukwe providing key baskets. Eastern Kentucky closed the half on a 14-0 run, turning the nine-point deficit into a 32-28 halftime advantage.
That defensive stand proved to be the pivotal sequence of the game. Eastern Kentucky never relinquished the lead after intermission, systematically extending its advantage each quarter. The Lady Colonels scored 19 points in the third and a game-high 23 in the fourth to pull away for a comfortable victory, their second this season over Queens.
Angeles, a guard from Melbourne, Australia, led all scorers with 17 points, adding three assists in 36 minutes of action. She was instrumental in stabilizing the Eastern Kentucky offense during the comeback. She was supported by a balanced scoring effort that saw four other Lady Colonels reach double figures. Ndukwe, a forward from Inkster, Michigan, scored 13 points off the bench, while starters Joseana Vaz and Kenleigh Woods each added 11. Liz Freihofer contributed 10 points and a notable defensive presence with three blocked shots.
For Queens, which fell to 8-13 overall, Mapp finished with 16 points and Colvin added 14 points and five assists. Guard Alyssa Lewis provided a spark off the bench with 11 points, but the Royals could not recover from their frigid second-quarter performance, shooting just 21% from the floor in the period.
The victory improved Eastern Kentucky’s record to 19-4, solidifying its position near the top of the ASUN standings. The Lady Colonels have now won nine of their last ten games. Queens, in its second season at the Division I level, continues to seek consistency in conference play.
Eastern Kentucky will look to continue its momentum on the road at Lipscomb on Wednesday. Queens will attempt to regroup at home against Central Arkansas, also on Wednesday.
According to the Interstat ELO system, Eastern Kentucky entered the game with a 91.7% probability of winning. The Lady Colonels’ early struggles briefly challenged that projection, but their decisive response over the final three quarters ultimately fulfilled it. The game underscored Eastern Kentucky’s resilience and depth, characteristics that have defined its successful season.
