Gardner-Webb Edges UNC Asheville in Tight Big South Contest

ASHEVILLE, N.C. (Interstat) — In a game defined more by grit than grace, the Gardner-Webb Runnin’ Bulldogs edged the UNC Asheville Bulldogs 54-52 in a defensive struggle at Kimmel Arena on Friday night. The contest, a rematch of a Jan. 7 meeting won by UNC Asheville, saw both teams combine for 46 turnovers and shoot under 30% from the field, culminating in a frantic final minute that delivered the narrow victory to the visiting Runnin’ Bulldogs.

The most critical sequence unfolded in the game’s closing seconds. Trailing 52-50 with under a minute to play, UNC Asheville’s D’Yanna Maxey committed a traveling turnover. Gardner-Webb capitalized immediately, as guard Nyla Walker found Jaelyn Acker for a clutch 3-pointer from the wing with 57 seconds remaining, putting the Runnin’ Bulldogs ahead 53-52.

UNC Asheville, after a timeout, ran a play for its standout performer, Nia Green. The 6-foot forward from Baltimore, who finished with a double-double of 17 points and 10 rebounds, saw her driving attempt disrupted, leading to a held ball and a turnover with 35 seconds left. Gardner-Webb’s Walker then delivered the decisive blow. Isolated on the wing, the 5-foot-4 guard from Frankfort, Illinois, drove into the lane and sank a floating jumper with just two seconds on the clock to extend the lead to 54-52.

UNC Asheville’s final attempt, a desperation 3-pointer from Aileen Marquez, missed as time expired, sealing a hard-fought road win for Gardner-Webb.

The entire game was a testament to defensive pressure and offensive inefficiency. Gardner-Webb improved to 7-16 overall, while UNC Asheville fell to 8-14. Both teams are members of the Big South Conference.

Statistically, the game was an anomaly. Gardner-Webb won despite making only 20 of 55 field goal attempts (36.4%) and committing 21 turnovers. Their saving grace was a 6-for-20 performance from beyond the arc, including the late triple from Acker. UNC Asheville was even colder, shooting a dismal 14 for 53 (26.4%) from the floor and an abysmal 3 of 23 (13.0%) from 3-point range. The home Bulldogs kept themselves in the game almost exclusively at the free-throw line, converting 21 of 27 attempts, and by dominating the offensive glass with 16 rebounds, leading to 16 second-chance points.

The individual battle highlighted the contrasting styles. Gardner-Webb was led by Amina Gray, who scored a game-high 18 points, including three 3-pointers. Walker provided a crucial spark off the bench with 8 points, 4 rebounds, and 3 assists, her last two assists setting up the game-tying and game-winning baskets.

For UNC Asheville, Green’s all-around effort of 17 points, 10 rebounds, 4 assists, and 3 blocks was the cornerstone of their effort. Kristen McMillan of Birmingham, Alabama, added 11 points and 6 rebounds, while Deb Orianegbena chipped in 8 points and 7 rebounds. Journee McDaniel of New Bern, North Carolina, hauled in a game-high 11 rebounds.

The game’s tempo was set early, with both teams locked at 17 after a sloppy first quarter. Gardner-Webb managed a 30-28 halftime lead despite 13 first-half turnovers, largely because UNC Asheville countered with 14 of their own. The third quarter saw the home Bulldogs briefly seize momentum, outscoring Gardner-Webb 16-11 to take a 44-41 lead into the final period.

The fourth quarter was a grind, with both teams struggling to score for long stretches. UNC Asheville’s last field goal was Green’s jumper off a turnover with 1:38 remaining, giving them a 52-50 advantage. From that point, their offense stalled, committing three critical turnovers in the final minute to gift Gardner-Webb the opportunity to snatch the victory.

The win breaks a three-game losing streak for Gardner-Webb, which had lost to Longwood, High Point, and Presbyterian in its last three outings. For UNC Asheville, the defeat marks a missed opportunity to sweep the season series and build momentum after a narrow win over South Carolina Upstate earlier in the week.

According to Interstat’s ELO system, Gardner-Webb entered with a 55.3% probability to win. The announced attendance at Kimmel Arena was 194.

Gardner-Webb next hosts Winthrop on Feb. 7. UNC Asheville travels to face Charleston Southern on Feb. 4.
